President of General Assembly to mark twenty-fifth anniversary of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

What:? The President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Phil¨¦mon Yang, will convene a high-level meeting on 25 November 2024 to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women as violence against women and girls continues to be the most pervasive human rights violation in the world.

Significant advances have been made across the world with the adoption of laws and policies to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls. Additionally, in the Pact for the Future, Member States reaffirmed their commitment to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, to accelerating efforts to achieve gender equality and to eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls.

Yet, globally, an estimated 736 million women¡ªnearly one in three¡ªhave experienced physical and/or sexual violence or both at least once in their lives. ?Impunity and lack of accountability remain a concern and the misuse of information and communication technologies (ICT) has further impacted women¡¯s rights, exacerbated existing forms of violence and created new ones.

The High-Level event will be an opportunity to highlight achievements, share best practices and identify challenges to eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls and to galvanize efforts in line with the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action as the thirtieth anniversary of their adoption approaches in 2025.
