Juan Santander assumed the role of Deputy Director of the Public Partnership Division at UNICEF’s headquarters in New York in April 2024. Prior to this, he was appointed UNICEF’s Representative to Montenegro by UNICEF’s Executive Director, Henrietta Fore. As the fourth UNICEF Representative to Montenegro since its independence in 2006, Santander follows in the footsteps of predecessors Osama Khogali, Benjamin Perks, and Nola Skinner. During their tenures, UNICEF made significant strides in Montenegro, advancing the protection of children's rights across various domains. These achievements include bolstering support for children with disabilities and those without parental care, combating violence against children, expanding preschool education coverage, enhancing formal and non-formal education quality, promoting media literacy, and fostering youth engagement in societal affairs.
He brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously served as the Deputy Representative for UNICEF in Thailand and Venezuela. His career at UNICEF includes notable positions such as Chief of Social Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation in Lebanon, Chief of Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation in Yemen, and Knowledge Management Specialist in Iraq. Before his tenure at UNICEF, Santander worked for the 麻豆APP Assistance Mission to Iraq and UNDP in Iraq.
Santander is a graduate of Albert Ludwig University, renowned for its Global Studies program. Proficient in English, Spanish, and French, he brings a multilingual edge to his work.
