Advancing Our Common Agenda to address current and future challenges
Synopsis
Objectives
The project aims to deliver the Secretary-General¡¯s vision on the future of multilateralism to advance Our Common Agenda and to response to current and future global challenges.
Components
Main components include articulating and implementing strategic policy direction to ensure Â鶹APP System-wide coherence in planning, implementation, reporting, and delivery of key proposals, leveraging existing mechanisms where possible. This includes preparing for the Summit of the Future in 2024; engaging with Member States, the Â鶹APP System, and other global actors; providing strategic coordination, management, and tracking of interlinked proposals; and supporting the implementation of decisions taken by senior UN leadership under Our Common Agenda. The work also involves initiating and/or supporting rapid action on proposals under the Secretary-General¡¯s leadership and carrying out project management, research, analysis, resource management, external relations, strategic communications, and operational support as needed.
Main achievements
First, the project supported Â鶹APP System-wide coherence in planning, implementation, reporting, and delivery of key proposals, including the Our Common Agenda (OCA). Secondly, it facilitated progress in preparations for the 2024 Summit of the Future by supporting intergovernmental engagements and working closely with Member States. Thirdly, the project provided strategic coordination for the proposals and implementation of decisions made by senior UN leadership on OCA, including follow-up on the Secretary-General¡¯s related proposals. Finally, the project developed the OCA website and increased its visibility.
The project also supported complex intergovernmental consultations and negotiations, ensuring high levels of engagement and support for Our Common Agenda. The Secretary-General and other senior officials provided regular updates, diplomatic engagements, and appearances focused on the Summit. The project supported the co-facilitators¡¯ informal consultations on the Zero-Draft of the Pact for the Future held in November and December 2023.
The Common Agenda Dashboard, launched in April 2023 to monitor Â鶹APP System-wide implementation of Common Agenda proposals, has proven to be a valuable platform for tracking up-to-date information. Additionally, two virtual multistakeholder consultations involved over 800 participants, including representatives from Major Groups, other stakeholders, and civil society.
Impact
This project contributed to advancing the Secretary-General¡¯s vision for more inclusive, networked, and effective multilateralism better suited to the challenges of an interconnected world, including progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on climate change and other existing frameworks, as well to improving global governance arrangements that better protect and deliver global public goods where gaps remain.
