On December 10, the world marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The anniversary highlights the continued relevance of the Declaration in today's world, especially in addressing issues like climate change and the digital divide. The anniversary activities include the perspectives of young people from around the globe, through the work of an , selected for their diverse and impactful human rights initiatives at the local level.
Elite Kenyan marathoner championing battle against Gender-Based Violence
Viola Cheptoo Lagat, 34, has run and won many races in her illustrious career as a long-distance athlete. However, her world changed when her friend and fellow athlete, Agnes Tirop, was killed just days after breaking a world record. Viola together with other female athletes and friends founded ‘Tirop’s Angels’ foundation to fight Gender-Based Violence.

Kenyan Marathon Stars Advocate for Peace and Combat Gender-Based Violence at UN Headquarters in New York
(Nairobi, 6 November). Kenyan marathon stars visited the Âé¶¹APP Headquarters in New York after dominating the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon (#TCSNYCMarathon) on 5 November. The elite athletes Viola Cheptoo Lagat and Albert Korir visited the UN global operations headquarters the day after their high-level performances at the prestigious event.

Kenyan Coastal Villagers earning a living from selling Carbon Credits

Kiswahili speakers in East Africa have a newly invented word, "hewa kaa", meaning carbon credit – commodity villagers in Kenya's coastal village are selling to international corporates in lieu of their pollution. When asked what business these villagers are in, they say: "we are selling air."
