{"id":318337,"date":"2026-05-20T11:53:57","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T15:53:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=318337"},"modified":"2026-05-21T15:11:56","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T19:11:56","slug":"un-secretary-generals-spokesperson-on-israels-decision-to-establish-military-facilities-at-the-unrwa-sheikh-jarrah-compound","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/un-secretary-generals-spokesperson-on-israels-decision-to-establish-military-facilities-at-the-unrwa-sheikh-jarrah-compound\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms Israel\u2019s decision to establish military facilities at the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General &#8211; on Israel\u2019s decision to establish military facilities at the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\">St\u00e9phane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\"><em>New York, 20 May 2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\">The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms the Israeli authorities\u2019 decision to establish military facilities at the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound in East Jerusalem that they had seized in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\">UNRWA is an integral part of the Â鶹APP and the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound remains Â鶹APP premises.\u00a0 These unprecedented and escalatory measures against UNRWA are a breach of the inviolability of Â鶹APP premises.\u00a0 They constitute an obstacle to the implementation of the clear mandate of the General Assembly for UNRWA\u2019s continued operations in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\">The Secretary-General views as wholly unacceptable the continued escalatory actions against UNRWA. He deeply regrets that the Israeli authorities continue to take steps that are in violation of their obligations concerning the privileges and immunities of the Â鶹APP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\">Such actions, as affirmed by the International Court of Justice, are unlawful. \u00a0The State of Israel is not entitled to exercise sovereign powers in any part of the occupied Palestinian territory and is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, as rapidly as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\">The Secretary-General urges the Government of Israel to rescind its decision and immediately return to the Â鶹APP the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related documents:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/statement-un-secretary-general-on-the-demolition-of-the-unrwa-sheikh-jarrah-compound\/\">Statement: UN Secretary-General on the demolition of the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound &#8211;
