  {"id":307813,"date":"2025-05-20T14:07:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T18:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=307813"},"modified":"2025-05-27T14:07:38","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T18:07:38","slug":"unfpa-press-release-20may25","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/unfpa-press-release-20may25\/","title":{"rendered":"UNFPA: As famine looms in Gaza, pregnant women and newborns face life-threatening health risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>20 May 2025<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a severe shortage of food and essential medicines, particularly during this siege,\u201d said a doctor at Al-Awda Hospital, in Gaza\u2019s central Deir Al-Balah governorate. \u201cIt\u2019s had a devastating impact on pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children in general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor spoke to UNFPA, the Âé¶¹APP sexual and reproductive health agency, after more than two months of Israel\u2019s catastrophic aid blockade on Gaza, in which all supplies \u2013 including food, medicine, shelter and fuel \u2013 were cut off. Reports show that\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/gaza-famine-special-snapshot-april-september-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one in every five people<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is now facing starvation; for an estimated 55,000 pregnant women, each missed meal increases the risk of miscarriages, stillbirths and undernourished newborns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are witnessing a significant increase in cases of low birth weight babies, directly linked to maternal malnutrition and anaemia during pregnancy,\u201d continued the doctor, who requested to remain anonymous for safety reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Aya Hassan, currently living in the Deir Al-Balah displacement camp in central Gaza said, \u201cWe are surviving on food provided by community kitchens. Clinics distribute nutritional supplements for pregnant women, and I attend follow-ups on a daily basis because I\u2019m afraid of developing vitamin deficiencies. Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza \u2013\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/ocha-ongoing-blockade-attacks-fuel-further-suffering-in-gaza\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of only eight<\/a><\/em>\u00a0hospitals still partially functioning \u2013 was\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ochaopt.org\/content\/humanitarian-situation-update-288-gaza-strip?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hit by an Israeli airstrike on 13 May<\/a><\/em>, the fourth time it has come under fire since October 2023. Less than 24 hours later, the European Hospital in Khan Younis was bombed too.<\/p>\n<p>Access to essential services is critically constrained while supplies for safe deliveries and newborn care are stuck at the border. Amid these dire conditions,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/resources\/palestine-situation-report-april-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">almost 11,000 pregnant women<\/a><\/em>\u00a0are already reported to be at risk of famine, and nearly 17,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women will need urgent treatment for acute malnutrition over the coming months. For many, the fallout is devastating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI treated a woman who had struggled with infertility for nearly seven years,\u201d continued the doctor at Al-Awda Hospital. \u201cShe finally became pregnant during the war, but due to the impacts of the siege, a lack of proper nutrition, and the trauma of bombardment when she was forced to flee, she went into premature labour and lost her baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UNFPA estimates that\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/resources\/palestine-situation-report-16-march-2025#:~:text=The%20humanitarian%20crisis%20in%20the,in%20less%20than%20three%20weeks.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one in three pregnancies<\/a><\/em>\u00a0are now considered high-risk, and one in five newborns are born preterm or underweight, requiring specialist care that is increasingly unavailable. I became pregnant with him in March 2024, during the war. The beginning of my pregnancy was extremely difficult due to malnutrition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Displaced with her family, she explained, \u201cI had to rely on IV fluids at Al-Awda Hospital and experienced preterm labour early in the eighth month. However, the medical team monitored my condition closely and provided consistent care, and I eventually gave birth at the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the first two months of the ceasefire, UNFPA estimates to have reached\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource-pdf\/Situation%20Report%20%23%2014%20-%20January%202025%20-%20Palestine.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">146,000 women and girls<\/a><\/em>\u00a0with reproductive health services and\u00a0 more than 100,000 people with<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource-pdf\/Palestine%20Situation%20Report%2015%20%28Final%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0protection services<\/a><\/em>, through health facilities and mobile clinics.
