The Committee and the Division for Palestinian Rights of the UN Secretariat provide the information \u201cas is\u201d without warranty of any kind, and do not accept any responsibility or liability for the accuracy, or reliability of the information contained in the websites linked in the newsletter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>NGO Action News<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>2 April 2018<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Global<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Following the Palestine Land Day protests in Gaza on 30 March, during which 17 Palestinians were killed and hundreds injured, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2018\/03\/israelopt-authorities-must-refrain-from-using-excessive-force-in-response-to-palestine-land-day-protests\/\">Amnesty International<\/a> called on the Israeli authorities to stop the use of lethal and other excessive force. The organization further called for independent and effective investigations to be launched immediately. <a href=\"http:\/\/english.wafa.ps\/page.aspx?id=tZmpBRa97107358590atZmpBR\">Human Rights Watch<\/a> stated that the incidents raised \u201cserious questions about Israel\u2019s longstanding use of live ammunition to police demonstrations\u201d. Prior to the demonstrations, <a href=\"http:\/\/peacenow.org\/entry.php?id=27265#.Wr1SeC7wbcs\">Americans for Peace Now<\/a> had called on the Israeli security forces to exercise restraint, reaffirming the right of Palestinians to hold non-violent protests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Middle East<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On 31 March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adalah.org\/en\/content\/view\/9449\">Adalah-The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel and Al Mezan Center for Human Rights<\/a> sent an urgent letter to Israel\u2019s Attorney General Mandelblit requesting that criminal investigations be immediately opened into the killings in Gaza of the day before. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.btselem.org\/press_releases\/20180330_shooting_unarmed_demonstrators_illegal\">B\u2019Tselem<\/a> pointed out that shooting unarmed demonstrators was illegal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On 25 March, <a href=\"http:\/\/peacenow.org.il\/en\/annual-construction-report-17-average-yearly-growth-three-quarters-isolated-settlements\">Peace Now<\/a> released its annual report on settlement construction in the West Bank excluding East Jerusalem <em>\u201c17% Above Average Yearly Growth, Three Quarters in Isolated Settlements\u201d<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On 23 March, the 6th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palestinemarathon.org\/info\/10.html\">Palestine Marathon<\/a> took place in Bethlehem, sponsored by the Palestine Olympic Committee. Approximately 7,000 runners from 72 countries participated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On 22 March, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pngo.net\/position-paper-on-the-ongoing-campaign-to-silence-delegitimize-and-de-fund-palestinian-civil-society-organizations-and-human-rights-defenders\/\">the Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO) and the Palestinian Human Rights Organizations Council (PHROC)<\/a> issued the position paper <em>\u201cOngoing Campaign to Silence, Delegitimize, and De-fund Palestinian Civil Society Organizations and Human Rights Defenders\u201d<\/em>, calling on international partners to continue supporting their work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.badil.org\/en\/publication\/press-releases\/87-2018\/4853-pr-en-270318-07.html\">BADIL<\/a> Resource Center for Palestinian Residency &amp; Refugee Rights has made its engagement and submissions at the 7th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (27 February to 24 March) available online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>North America<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On 8 April, Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon, Executive Director of <a href=\"http:\/\/cmep.org\/event\/regional-event-an-easter-gathering\/\">Churches for Middle East Peace<\/a> (CMEP), will speak in Washington, D.C., at <em>\u201cAn Easter Gathering\u201d<\/em>, hosted by the PLO General Delegation to the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On 27 March, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalcenters.columbia.edu\/events\/conversation-salam-fayyad\">Columbia University<\/a> in New York hosted a conversation with former Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on regional developments and prospects for Israeli-Palestinian peace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On 27 March, the <a href=\"http:\/\/arabcenterdc.org\/events\/trumps-policy-reversals-on-palestine\/\">Arab Center Washington DC<\/a> hosted a panel discussion on <em>\u201cTrump\u2019s Policy Reversals on Palestine: Political and Legal Ramifications\u201d<\/em> with Yousef Munayyer, US Campaign for Palestinian Rights; William B. Quandt, University of Virginia; John Quigley, Ohio State University; and Shibley Telhamy, University of Maryland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Latin America<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federacionpalestina.cl\/actividad.php?id=3\">Federaci\u00f3n Palestina de Chile<\/a>, in cooperation with the Palestine International Institute in Amman, is offering youth in Chile\u2019s Palestinian diaspora community scholarships <em>(\u201cBeca Mahmoud Darwish\u201d<\/em>) for Arabic courses in Jordan. Further information about the programme and the deadlines for application is available online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Â鶹APP<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On 30 March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2018-03-30\/statement-attributable-spokesman-secretary-general-situation-gaza\">UN Secretary-General<\/a> Ant\u00f3nio Guterres expressed deep concern about the events in Gaza and called for an independent and transparent investigation into the incidents reported.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On 28 March, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2018\/gapal1404.doc.htm\">Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People<\/a> held its 389th meeting at UN Headquarters in New York. The Committee was briefed by UNRWA\u2019s representative in New York on recent developments and the Agency\u2019s current financial crisis.
