Vaccines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On 24 August 2021, COVAX delivered another shipment of vaccines to oPt: 500,000 Moderna vaccines donated by the US government, of which 300,000\u00a0doses were allocated for the West Bank and the other 200,000 destined for the Gaza Strip.\u00a0WHO\u00a0in oPt\u00a0works with its partners in COVAX to make sure Palestinians are getting these much-needed coronavirus vaccines, and thanks the US government for its generosity.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a025 August 2021,\u00a0COVAX\u00a0also delivered 100,000 doses of Pfizer vaccines to\u00a0oPt.<\/p>\n<p><em>#VaccinesSaveLives class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The state of emergency over COVID-19 decreed by President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank\u00a0continues in place<\/li>\n<li>Also\u00a0in West Bank,\u00a0medical staff and priority groups such as the elderly and sick are to receive the third \u2018booster\u2019 dose, while\u00a0universities must vaccinate up to 70% of administrative and academic staff for the school year to continue<\/li>\n<li>In Gaza,\u00a0the\u00a0MoH\u00a0has\u00a0now\u00a0halted mandatory vaccination of governmental staff members, service providers and\u00a0high school students\u00a0until\u00a0more vaccines are available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Surveillance<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"layout one-col fixed-width stack\">\n<div class=\"layout__inner\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The WHO risk assessment\u00a0remains\u00a0high,\u00a0with\u00a030,764\u00a0active cases\u00a0across the\u00a0oPt, a jump\u00a0of 150%\u00a0since\u00a0two weeks ago.\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0infections in the Gaza Strip still account for\u00a0the majority of\u00a0all\u00a0cases,\u00a0at\u00a0just below\u00a060%.<\/li>\n<li>In the West Bank,\u00a0numbers of\u00a0cases\u00a0have been\u00a0rising\u00a0steadily\u00a0week\u00a0by week,\u00a0and are now at 12,312,\u00a0while testing has\u00a0doubled allowing for a fall in positivity to 14% from 22% a week\u00a0ago<\/li>\n<li>The breakdown of active COVID-19 cases across the oPt is as follows: Gaza Strip (59.3%), followed by the West Bank governorates of Nablus (11.4%), Tulkarm (9.5%),\u00a0Ramallah\u00a0(4.5%),\u00a0Jenin\u00a0(4.4%),\u00a0Qalqilya\u00a0(3.9%),\u00a0Salfit (3.1%), Hebron\u00a0(1.1%) and Tubas\u00a0(0.7%)<\/li>\n<li>The overall Case Fatality Rate (CFR)\u00a0across oPt\u00a0remains at\u00a01%.\u00a0The CFR is the proportion of\u00a0deaths\u00a0among identified confirmed\u00a0cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Laboratory testing and diagnostics<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of tests conducted in the oPt has\u00a0increased\u00a0by\u00a055% during the reporting period (3\u00a0\u2013\u00a09 September),\u00a0with\u00a088,176\u00a0tests\u00a0conducted, and an overall positivity of 19%<\/li>\n<li>In the Gaza Strip, COVID-19 testing\u00a0has quadrupled over the past month, with an average of 4,875\u00a0tests per day\u00a0during the month of September. However, positivity is still\u00a0rather high, reaching 29% on\u00a09 September.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Isolation and Case Management, Operations Support and Logistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>In light of\u00a0the increased number of COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization, Gaza health authorities\u00a0expanded the number of beds allocated for COVID-19 management to 470, including 85\u00a0intensive care units\u00a0(ICU).\u00a0The overall\u00a0COVID-19 bed\u00a0occupancy\u00a0currently\u00a0is\u00a073%, with 341 of 470 beds occupied. Twelve health promoters conducted over 240 educational sessions in different localities of the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>They focused on busting myths and disinformation about vaccines and were delivered to oPt via the\u00a0COVAX mechanism: 40,000\u00a0doses went\u00a0to\u00a0Gaza and\u00a060,000\u00a0to West Bank<\/li>\n<li>The previous day, on Tuesday 24 August,\u00a0a shipment of 500,000 Moderna vaccines arrived in oPt also via the COVAX mechanism,\u00a0donated by\u00a0the US government: 200,000 doses were delivered to Gaza, while 300,000\u00a0were delivered\u00a0to West Bank.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Vaccination\u00a0Numbers\u00a0\/\u00a0News\u00a0(as of\u00a09\u00a0September)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>1,185,157\u00a0people have been vaccinated in total across the oPt:\u00a0840,339\u00a0in the West Bank, and\u00a0344,818\u00a0in Gaza.\u00a0These figures represent around 39.5% of the target Palestinian\u202fpopulation\u00a0(18 years and above)<\/li>\n<li>Of these numbers, the total who have received their second dose 488,469 in the oPt overall (excluding East Jerusalem):\u00a0407,055 in West Bank, and 81,144\u00a0in Gaza<\/li>\n<li>Gaza health authorities\u00a0have\u00a0increased\u00a0the number of vaccination centres to around\u00a049, fourteen of which are operating double shifts to offer vaccinations to those aged 16\u00a0and over<\/li>\n<li>On 25 August, authorities in Gaza launched\u00a0a campaign with incentives to encourage older people\u00a0to get vaccinated<\/li>\n<li>Concerns are rising that an increase in vaccination demand might not be met by the existing vaccine
