  {"id":254173,"date":"2021-06-16T19:45:28","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T23:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=254173"},"modified":"2021-06-23T19:48:36","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T23:48:36","slug":"incidents-in-gaza-jerusalem-16-june-2021-daily-press-briefing-excerpts","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/incidents-in-gaza-jerusalem-16-june-2021-daily-press-briefing-excerpts\/","title":{"rendered":"Incidents in Gaza, Jerusalem \u2013 16 June 2021 Daily Press Briefing \u2013 (Excerpts)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>16 JUNE 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following is a near-verbatim transcript of today\u2019s noon briefing by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Questions and Answers<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Thanks, Farhan.\u00a0 As I\u2019m sure you know, last night, there was escalating violence again in the Middle East, incendiary balloons coming from Gaza, air strikes from the Israelis into Gaza.\u00a0 Does the Secretary-General have any reaction to that, any concerns about what this means for the so-called ceasefire?<\/p>\n<p><u>Deputy Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 Yeah, what I can say about that is that the Secretary-General expresses concern over the most recent round of violence.\u00a0 It calls for the full respect of the ceasefire agreed on 20\u00a0May.\u00a0 He would like to see the cessation of hostilities be maintained and solidified in order to give space for the relevant parties to work out arrangements to stabilize the situation.<\/p>\n<p>UN Special Coordinator Tor Wennesland is continuing his diplomatic engagements with all sides towards that aim.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Yes, Farhan.\u00a0 I have two, in fact.\u00a0 First, in 1968, Farhan, Israel decided to do a military parade in East Jerusalem in violation of resolution 242.\u00a0 Security Council met and adopted resolution 250\u2026<\/p>\n<p><u>Deputy Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 Abdelhamid, before we go too far, I want to make it clear, this is meant to be an informational briefing.\u00a0 So, if you have a question, please get to the question.\u00a0 I\u2019m aware that you have your various other points.\u00a0 [cross talk]<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 I have a question.<\/p>\n<p><u>Deputy Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 Go ahead.<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Is Israel in violation of international law when they conducted the flag parade yesterday in east\u2026 Occupied East Jerusalem?\u00a0 I need a straightforward answer.\u00a0 Was Israel in violation of international law or not?<\/p>\n<p><u>Deputy Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 What I can tell you is that we\u2019ve made clear what our concerns are.\u00a0 We want\u2026 again, for us, the main priority at this stage is the ceasefire, which, as we\u2019ve said several times over the past week, is still a fragile one and needs to be shored up.<\/p>\n<p>We want to make sure that the cessation of hostilities are maintained and solidified, and we are working against any actions that can put that cessation of hostilities in danger.\u00a0 So, that is what we\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<p>At this stage, the UN is in contact with all relevant parties on matters related to the cessation of hostilities, and we\u2019ll try to see what arrangements can be put in place to stabilize the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Yeah, just follow-up.\u00a0 Today, there\u2019s a young woman\u2026 [inaudible] a 29-year-old.\u00a0 She was shot and killed with no [inaudible] at the checkpoint near the village of Hizma near Jerusalem.\u00a0 Are you aware of this incident, too?<\/p>\n<p><u>Deputy Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to collect all of the various bits of data around incidents of violence that have occurred, and we are trying to do what we can to make sure that all violence is halted.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For information media.
