  {"id":250110,"date":"2021-04-26T12:05:49","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T16:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=250110"},"modified":"2021-05-04T16:45:25","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T20:45:25","slug":"incidents-in-gaza-jerusalem-26-april-2021-daily-press-briefing-excerpts","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/incidents-in-gaza-jerusalem-26-april-2021-daily-press-briefing-excerpts\/","title":{"rendered":"Incidents in Gaza, Jerusalem \u2013 26 April 2021 Daily Press Briefing \u2013 (Excerpts)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>26 APRIL 2021<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The following is a near-verbatim transcript of today\u2019s noon briefing by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Middle East<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, voiced his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/statement-by-special-coordinator-wennesland-on-recent-escalations-in-jerusalem-and-around-gaza\/\">alarm<\/a> at the recent escalations in Jerusalem and around Gaza.\u00a0 He condemned all such acts of violence and reiterated his call upon all sides to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan and this politically charged time for all.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the provocative acts across Jerusalem must cease.\u00a0 The indiscriminate launching of rockets towards Israeli population centres violates international law and must stop immediately, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The UN is still actively working to de-escalate the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Questions and Answers<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Thank you, Farhan.\u00a0 Today, Israel decided to shut off the beaches of Gaza to prevent fishermen to go on their daily life in trying to find some fishing.\u00a0 The number of people injured in Jerusalem, over 135.\u00a0 And the whole world has been commenting on what\u2019s going on in Jerusalem except the Âé¶¹APP.\u00a0 And when I ask Mr.\u00a0St\u00e9phane Dujarric last Friday, he took me back to the statement of Mr.\u00a0Wennesland\u2026 to Mr.\u00a0Tor Wennesland, which was three days or two days before but has nothing to do with what happened in Jerusalem.\u00a0 So, why is there is no specific statement from the Special Coordinator about what\u2019s going on now in Jerusalem?<\/p>\n<p><u>Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 Well, regarding what\u2019s happening, we, that is to say the Secretary-General and we in the Secretariat, reiterate Special Coordinator Wennesland\u2019s statement of Saturday, in which he expressed alarm at the recent escalations in Jerusalem and around Gaza and called on all sides to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalations, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan, and we continue to make that call.<\/p>\n<p>And meanwhile, Mr.\u00a0Wennesland will continue with his work to de-escalate tensions.\u00a0 He met with Israeli officials today, and he\u2019s going to travel tomorrow to Jordan and Egypt for further discussions.\u00a0 So, he is continuing with his work, and we are continuing to speak out in support of him.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Sato?<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Can you confirm, Mr.\u00a0Haq, that he received a letter from the Israeli officials threatening Gaza of major escalation if they don\u2019t stop these rockets fired at the Israeli towns and settlements?<\/p>\n<p><u>Spokesman<\/u>:\u00a0 No, I don\u2019t have any confirmation of that.\u00a0 Like I said, he did meet with the Israeli officials this morning, so he is in discussions with them, and he will be in discussions with Jordanian and Egyptian officials, as well.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For information media.
