SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES 'GRAVE CONCERN' OVER WEST BANK INCIDENTS<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

AND APPEALS TO ISRAEL TO RESPECT FOURTH GENEVA CONVENTION<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The following statement is attributable to the Spokesman for Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General has learned with grave concern of the incidents that took place today in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. He strongly deplores the injuries caused to innocent civilians and the loss of life. He is especially disturbed by the reports of casualties by gunfire.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

In his meeting with Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir on 11 April, the Secretary-General urged that the Israeli authorities exercise maximum restraint in the occupied territories and cautioned of the dangers inherent in a lack of progress towards a comprehensive settlement.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

He appeals to Israel again, as the occupying Power, to abide in full by its obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention.<\/p><\/div>\n
