SECRETARY-GENERAL TO ATTEND SUMMIT ON THREAT<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

TO MIDDLE EAST PEACE PROCESS IN EGYPT NEXT WEEK <\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The following was issued today by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali: <\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\tSecretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali will attend the summit conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, that has been called to confront the acts of violence that threaten the Middle East peace process.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tThe Secretary-General was invited by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and United States President William Clinton to join other world leaders involved in the peace process at the summit on Wednesday, 13 March.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tFollowing the upsurge in terrorist activities aimed at undermining the Middle East peace process, the Secretary-General issued a statement on 5 March, calling upon the international community "to stand together, to speak out, and to unite in action against these despicable acts of violence". (See Press Release SG\/SM\/5913.)\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t"The international community must not let terrorism succeed", he said. "The Â鶹APP must undertake a new initiative to deal with the multinational dimension of terrorism."\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\tRecalling the declaration adopted by the General Assembly on measures to eliminate international terrorism, the Secretary-General reaffirmed that the Â鶹APP is ready to exert every effort in the implementation of the follow-up to this summit.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
