  {"id":209833,"date":"2007-04-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T19:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=209833"},"modified":"2019-03-12T19:50:03","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T19:50:03","slug":"auto-insert-209833","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-209833\/","title":{"rendered":"SecGen encouraged by &#8216;determined will of Arab leaders&#8217; in seeking solutions &#8211; UN news item"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><strong>Ban Ki-moon encouraged by &#8216;determined will of Arab leaders&#8217; in seeking solutions<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:5pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:7pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><i>2 April 2007 <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><i>&#8211; <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon returned to Âé¶¹APP Headquarters in New York today from a tour of the Middle East and said he was &#8220;encouraged by the very active support and determined will of Arab leaders&#8221; in tackling a variety of problems from the Palestinian issue to the conflicts in Sudan and Somalia. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:9px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">&#8220;I was able to see the Arab leaders engaging on many important regional issues,&#8221; he <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/sg\/offthecuff.asp?nid=1010\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><u>told reporters<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Mr. Ban, who attended the Arab League summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and also visited Iraq, Egypt, Israel, the occupied Palestinian territory, and Lebanon, noted that with the formation of a Palestinian National Unity Government, &#8220;the active diplomatic initiatives are on the way: Arab peace initiatives, Arab leaders who are determined to visit this issue again as a foundation for establishing a good relationship and peace between Israel and Arab countries, and particularly between Israel and the Palestinian authorities.&#8221; <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">He was asked whether with the formation of the Unity Government by Hamas and President Mahmoud Abbas&#8217;s Fatah movement, the time was right now to lift a donors&#8217; embargo imposed after Hamas, which does not recognize Israel&#8217;s right to exist, formed the Government alone last year. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&#8220;There was an understanding among the Quartet [UN, European Union, Russia and United States, who are seeking a two-State solution] that we will wait and see how the National Unity Government, particularly Hamas, will perform in terms of all these international expectations,&#8221; he replied. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&#8220;We hope that the National Unity Government will meet the expectations of the international community.
