Establishment of a working group of Israeli and Palestinian elected representatives to work constantly for cooperation<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Geneva, 17 July 2003 – <\/strong>At the close of today's meeting between members of the Knesset and the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in Geneva at the Headquarters of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the following statement was adopted by consensus. <\/p><\/div>\n

"In cooperation between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Manifesto – Movement for a Just and Lasting Peace in the Middle East – and under the auspices of the IPU Middle East Committee, a meeting was held in Geneva between representatives of the Israeli Knesset and the Palestinian Legislative Council. The aim of the meeting was to renew the dialogue between the two parties who take part in the activities of the IPU. <\/p><\/div>\n

At the end of the discussions and within the framework of the renewed peace process and the cooperation between the partners in the IPU, it was agreed to establish a working group of Israeli and Palestinian elected representatives that will work constantly for cooperation and to prepare in the near future the infrastructure for cooperation between the two elected parliaments, within the peace process and towards the peace agreement between Israel and Palestine." <\/p><\/div>\n

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Finn Martin Vallersnes, member of the Norwegian Parliament and President of the IPU's Committee on Middle East Questions. The Knesset delegation was composed of the following MPs, Mr. Avraham Burg, Mr. Avshalom Vilan, Mr. Reshef Chayne and Mr. Majalli Whbee. <\/p><\/div>\n

The PLC delegation comprised Mr. Abdelkhader, I. F. Hamed, Mr. Ibrahim I.A. Elhabbash and Mr. Jawad K.H. Tibi. <\/p><\/div>\n

The IPU Secretary General, Mr. Anders B. Johnsson, was also present, as well as four members of the Manifesto – Movement for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. <\/p><\/div>\n

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, the IPU, the oldest multilateral organisation, currently has 145 affiliated national parliaments and five associated regional assemblies.
