  {"id":206830,"date":"2008-12-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T19:15:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=206830"},"modified":"2019-03-12T19:15:47","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T19:15:47","slug":"auto-insert-206830","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-206830\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency relief continues to filter into Gaza, UN reports &#8211; UN news item"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>Emergency relief continues to filter into Gaza, UN reports<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">11 December 2008 &#8211; A slow trickle of humanitarian aid has continued to flow into the Gaza Strip, where 1.5 million residents are forcibly confined, the Office of the Âé¶¹APP Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) reported today. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Close to 100 trucks were able to transport supplies into the impoverished region on the western flank of Israel, of which 21 were delivering provisions for humanitarian agencies. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Although the fleet represented a slight increase from yesterday, the average number of trucks crossing into Gaza in October was 123 per day and in May 2007 the average was some 475 trucks a day. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">UNSCO also reported that some industrial fuel made it to the Gaza power station, but most of the territory is still experiencing power cuts of four to eight hours a day despite the plant&#8217;s increased output. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">For its part, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/unrwa\/english.html\" style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\"><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">) reported that seven of its trucks were able to ship food into Gaza today, including sugar, canned meat and whole milk powder. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, UNRWA was established by the General Assembly to carry out direct relief and works programmes for Palestine refugees. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">At its annual pledging drive at UN Headquarters in New York yesterday, UNRWA announced that its cash reserves had plummeted from $60 million in 2006 to just $1 million, enough for less than one day&#8217;s average expenditure. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Israel closed border crossings into Gaza at the beginning of November citing rocket and other attacks by militants in the area against civilian targets in Israel as the reason. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emergency relief continues to filter into Gaza, UN reports 11 December 2008 &#8211; A slow trickle of humanitarian aid has continued to flow into the Gaza Strip, where 1.5 million residents are forcibly confined, the Office of the Âé¶¹APP Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) reported today.
