UNDP Signs Partnership Agreements in Support of Democratic Governance<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

and Rule of Law<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Jerusalem, 01 December 2011 – <\/strong>UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed two separate agreements today worth approximately USD 6 million with the Governments of Denmark, Sweden and EUPOL COPPS in an effort to reinforce transparency and democratic governance.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The first agreement is a USD 3.5 million joint programme between UNDP\/EUPOL COPPS and the Palestinian Authority. The programme, based on rule of law and respect for human rights, aims at strengthening internal police accountability, national anti-corruption efforts and the oversight role of civil society in democratic governance and preparation for statehood.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The second agreement, worth USD 2,558,281, aims at developing democratic, decentralized, transparent and inclusive system of Palestinian local government in order to deliver responsive and quality services to local communities. In addition, it will increase own source revenues for Palestinian local governments. The project will be jointly implemented by UNDP\/PAPP, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Local Government, Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA), and selected local governments.<\/p><\/div>\n

The signing took place on December 01, 2011 at the Swedish Consulate in the presence of Mr. Lars Adam Rehof, Chief of Mission of Denmark in the oPt, Mr. Axel Wernhoff, Consul General of Sweden and Mr. Khaled Shahwan, UNDP Deputy Special Representative (Operations).<\/p><\/div>\n
