Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier calls for investigation into death of Palestinian politician<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Speaking on 10 December in Berlin, Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement on the death of Palestinian politician Ziad Abu Ein in a clash with Israeli soldiers during a demonstration north of Ramallah:<\/p><\/div>\n

“The tragic death of Ziad Abu Ein in the West Bank marks a new low in the weeks-long tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. Now it is vital to shed light on the circumstances surrounding his death quickly, comprehensively and transparently for all parties. If this reveals indications of misconduct, consequences must follow.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

This incident shows once again that the current situation is untenable. The recurring outbreaks of violence, which have claimed victims on both sides, must come to an end. Both sides need to take concrete steps to defuse the situation and resume the peace talks.<\/p><\/div>\n
