DEPUTY MIDDLE EAST ENVOY IS NAMED<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<li style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">The Secretary-General has asked Max Gaylard of Australia, a senior Âé¶¹APP official with extensive experience in humanitarian and development coordination, to serve as Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process ad interim.&#160;<br \/>\n&#160; <\/li>\n<li style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">The Secretary-General has asked Mr. Gaylard to travel to the region this week to lead the UN country team in the occupied Palestinian territory.<br \/>\n&#160; <\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">Gaylard is currently serving as the Director of Mine Action with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/Depts\/dpko\/dpko\/\" style=\"color:#0033cc;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">) and has previously served as the Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator in Somalia and as the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq.<br \/>\n&#160; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">Asked whether the appointment was intended as a replacement for former UN Special Coordinator Michael Williams, the Spokeswoman said that this was an ad interim appointment for the Deputy Special Coordinator, Kevin Kennedy, who had recently left the mission. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:center;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&#160;<strong>U.N. POLITICAL CHIEF TO ATTEND MIDDLE EAST QUARTET MEETING<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<li style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">The Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, B.
