  {"id":203375,"date":"2007-05-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=203375"},"modified":"2019-03-12T18:33:44","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:33:44","slug":"auto-insert-203375","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-203375\/","title":{"rendered":"SecGen chooses Michael Williams as next UN Special Coordinator for Middle East peace process &#8211; UN news item"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><strong>British adviser chosen as next UN envoy on Middle East peace process<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:6pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:7px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:7pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><i>16 May 2007 <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\"><i>&#8211; <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed the United Kingdom&#8217;s Michael Williams, a long-time Âé¶¹APP staffer and foreign policy adviser, to the post of Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Mr. Williams will also serve as the Secretary-General&#8217;s Personal Representative to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority and his Envoy to the Quartet, the international diplomatic grouping on the Middle East. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Mr. Williams &#8211; who replaces Alvaro de Soto of Peru &#8211; has been serving as Mr. Ban&#8217;s Special Adviser on the situation in the Middle East, and was previously Director of the Asia and the Pacific Division in the UN Department of Political Affairs. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">He held several senior UN posts during the early 1990s, including within the then UN Transitional Administration in Cambodia (UNTAC) and the UN Protection Force in the Former Yugoslavia (UNPROFOR). <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Between 1999 and 2005, Mr. Williams served as a special adviser to successive Foreign Secretaries in the British Government, and he has also worked for Amnesty and as a journalist with the BBC. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Mr. Ban, who conveyed his decision on the Middle East envoy in a letter sent yesterday to Security Council members, announced other senior appointments today. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Haile Menkerios of Eritrea &#8211; who is currently the Secretary-General&#8217;s Deputy Special Representative for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) &#8211; becomes the new Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, succeeding Tuliameni Kalomoh of Namibia. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">South Africa&#8217;s Nicholas Haysom has been chosen as the next Director for Political Affairs in Mr. Ban&#8217;s Executive Office, replacing Carlos Lopes of Guinea-Bissau.
