\nSpecial Middle East Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Ambassador at Large Alexander Kalugin met on February 22 with Andreas Schockenhoff, Deputy Chairman of the CDU\/CSU Parliamentary Group in the FRG Bundestag, and on February 27 with Ruprecht Polenz, Chairman of the FRG Bundestag Foreign Policy Committee. <\/p><\/div>\n

Detailed explanations were given to the German parliamentarians regarding the initiative of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin for holding in Moscow contacts with the representatives of Hamas, which won legitimate, democratic Palestinian Legislative Council elections on January 25, 2006. <\/p><\/div>\n

It was stressed that Russia's line in Palestinian-Israeli settlement remains unchanged and is not contrary to the approaches agreed on in the Quartet of international mediators: getting Hamas to renounce violence as a means for achieving its political aims, to observe the previously reached Palestinian-Israeli agreements and commitments, including those under the Roadmap, and to recognize the right of Israel to exist. <\/p><\/div>\n
