  {"id":198942,"date":"2011-05-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=198942"},"modified":"2019-03-12T17:41:50","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:41:50","slug":"auto-insert-198942","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-198942\/","title":{"rendered":"Ban calls on Palestinian parties to commit to principles for two-State solution &#8211; UN news item"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>Ban Calls on Palestinian Parties to Commit to Principles for Two-state Solution<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Ahead of the signing today in Cairo of a unity agreement between rivals Hamas and Fatah, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly appealed to all Palestinian parties to commit to the principles of the diplomatic Quartet, which seeks to have two States &#8212; Israel and Palestine &#8212; living side by side in peace and security within recognized borders. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Last week representatives of Hamas and Fatah announced that they struck a deal, under the auspices of Egypt, to form a national unity government and hold elections within a year. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Hamas, which does not recognize Israel&#8217;s right to exist, took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 after ousting the Fatah party of the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that controls parts of the West Bank. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unispal.un.org\/pdfs\/4CD6754C700F0A9D85257886004AF7F5.pdf\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">statement<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">&nbsp;issued last night by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban voiced his support for efforts for unity and the work of Egypt and Mr. Abbas in this regard. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&#8220;He wishes to see unity in the framework of the positions of the Quartet and the commitments of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Arab Peace Initiative,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;The Secretary-General therefore strongly appeals to all Palestinian parties to commit to these principles.&#8221; <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Under the Road Map peace plan endorsed by the Quartet &#8212; comprising the UN, European Union, Russia and the United States &#8212; Israel and an independent State of Palestine established on territory occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War would live side by side in peace and security within recognized borders. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The Secretary-General sent the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, to the Egyptian capital for today&#8217;s signing. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Mr. Serry stated last week that reconciliation between the two main Palestinian factions is essential for achieving a two-state solution and should take place in a manner that promotes the cause of peace. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians have been stalled since late September following Israel&#8217;s refusal to extend a 10-month freeze on settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territory.
