World Bank, Palestinian Authority Sign Agreement to Finance<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Solid Waste and Environmental Management Project<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

GAZA, November 14, 2000–<\/strong>The World Bank, represented by Joseph Saba, Country Director, West Bank & Gaza Office, and the Palestinian Authority, represented by Minister of Finance Mohammad Zuhdi Nashashibi, signed a credit agreement today to finance the Solid Waste and Environmental Management Project<\/strong>. The credit amount is US$9.5 million.<\/p><\/div>\n

The project's objective is to finance interventions in solid waste collection, transfer, and disposal of waste for the Jenin Governorate. The project will also assist in institutional-building within the Ministry of Environmental Affairs.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The project is expected to benefit the 200,000 inhabitants in towns and villages of Jenin Governorate through better access to solid waste management services; through cleaner environment including reduction in air pollution currently being generated from random waste burning; and through prevention of leachate pollution thereby preserving the underground water aquifers for generations to come. The municipalities in the governorate will also benefit through capacity building interventions.<\/p><\/div>\n

The overall project cost is US$14 million. The World Bank's credit of US$9.5 million is drawn from the Trust Fund for Gaza and the West Bank and is on standard IDA (International Development Association) terms with no interest, 40-year maturity, a 10-year grace period, and 0.75 percent service charge. The credit is accompanied by counterpart financing from the Palestinian Authority of US$1.25 million and through parallel funding of US$3.25 from the European Union on grant terms that will be used primarily for equipment acquisition.<\/p><\/div>\n
