PACE deeply concerned about the fresh outbreak of violence in the Gaza Strip<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Strasbourg, 15.11.2012 – Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and Pietro Marcenaro (Italy, SOC), Chair of the PACE Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy and newly elected rapporteur on the situation in the Middle East, today expressed their grave concern following the fresh outbreak of violence in the Gaza Strip.<\/p><\/div>\n

“The international community cannot stand by and watch as what may become a new full-scale tragedy unfolds. It is not the Parliamentary Assembly’s role to say who is right and who is wrong, as many are so hasty to do, but to encourage dialogue and a solution which is not based on violence and war”, they said, calling for the restraint needed to avoid a dangerous escalation, in which the civilians of the area would pay the highest price.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

PACE regularly brings together members of the Israeli Knesset, which holds observer status with the Assembly, and members of the Palestinian National Council, which has Partner for Democracy status, to foster dialogue between the two sides and seek a peaceful solution to the conflict.<\/p><\/div>\n
