Strasbourg, 08.09.2006 – The crisis in Lebanon, the ongoing violence in Iraq and the situation in Gaza are among issues to be discussed at a hearing on the situation in the Middle East organised by the Political Affairs Committee of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) in Gaziantep, Turkey, on Tuesday 12 September 2006.<\/p><\/div>\n

Parliamentarians from Iraq, Israel and the Palestinian Legislative Council are expected to attend, and legislators from Lebanon and Syria have also been invited. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Leo Brincat (Malta, SOC), who visited Lebanon in June, prior to the outbreak of hostilities, will also give his assessment of possibilities for co-operation between the Council of Europe and Lebanon.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In January 2005 the Parliamentary Assembly resolved to facilitate contacts between members of the Palestinian Legislative Council and the Knesset, which holds observer status with PACE.<\/p><\/div>\n
