Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Speaks to Head of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas by Telephone<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\nA telephone conversation took place on June 22 between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and Head of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Abbas briefed on the situation in Palestinian-Israeli relations with due regard to the contacts he held with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. He affirmed the readiness of the PNA leadership to strengthen Palestinian-Israeli cooperation in connection with Israel's upcoming withdrawal from Gaza and a part of the West Bank, and accentuated the importance of the fulfillment by the parties of the obligations assumed, including the accords of Sharm El Sheikh. The PNA Head highly assessed Russia's support of the Palestinian-Israeli settlement process and spoke for its continuing to play an active role in Middle East affairs as a whole. <\/p><\/div>\n

Lavrov stressed that Russia attaches great importance to a continued Palestinian-Israeli dialogue and the ensuring of a calm and coordinated Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and a part of the West Bank as an important stage on the road to resuming the Road Map's implementation. These questions will be the focus of attention of the next Middle East Quartet ministerial meeting in London on June 23. The minister also affirmed readiness to render practical assistance to the PNA in strengthening Palestinian statehood. <\/p><\/div>\n
