Statement by Bernard Kouchner<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, underlines the importance of the unanimous call by the Â鶹APP Security Council last night for an immediate halt to the violence. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

In the face of the suffering caused and the numerous civilian deaths, he expresses his grave concern<\/strong> over the continuation of violence, the longer-range rockets recently launched from Gaza, the resumption of Israeli air raids and the preparations for a possible land operation. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Bernard Kouchner affirms that only a renewal of the truce<\/strong>, broken by rocket fire from Gaza on Israeli territory can guarantee the minimum conditions acceptable to the people of Gaza<\/strong>. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

He confirms the full support of the European Union for the efforts of Egypt, the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League to restore calm and re-establish the truce. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Bernard Kouchner recalls the pressing need for humanitarian support for the Gazan population<\/strong>, which France and the European Union are ready to increase at any time. <\/p><\/div>\n

The European Union is ready to resume its role in providing assistance at the Gaza border crossings, which must remain open. <\/p><\/div>\n

Bernard Kouchner reaffirms that the pursuit of negotiations<\/strong> between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government is the only solution to this interminable and bloody conflict<\/strong>, with continued efforts to re-establish Palestinian unity. <\/p><\/div>\n

The Minister remains in contact with the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority as well as his European Union counterparts, Â鶹APP Security Council members, Arab League and the Â鶹APP Secretary General in order to examine <\/span>ways to end the violence as quickly as possible<\/strong><\/span>, find the best responses to the humanitarian situation, resume without delay the search for a lasting political solution and define the particular role that the European Union could play to meet these objectives.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
