Minister Nicholson Concludes Productive Visit to Jerusalem and Ramallah<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

June 4, 2015 – Jerusalem – Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today concluded a successful visit to Jerusalem, where he met with President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the Middle East Peace Process and the critical security challenges facing Israel, including Iran, Hamas, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and other regional threats.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

During his trip, Minister Nicholson also met with Riad Malki, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Palestinian Authority, in Ramallah.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Minister Nicholson also participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in honour of the six million Jews who were murdered during the Second World War. He later toured the Old City of Jerusalem, where he visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Western Wall.<\/p><\/div>\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Canada’s bilateral relations with Israel are strong and multi-dimensional, marked by close political, economic, social and cultural ties. The relationship has strengthened in recent years, as evidenced by increased cooperation in public security, defence and trade and investment. Canada supports Israel’s right to defend itself by itself.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

•<\/span> <\/span>In January 2014, Canada’s then-minister of foreign affairs John Baird and Israel’s then-foreign minister Avigdor Liberman signed the Canada-Israel Strategic Partnership Memorandum of Understanding, designed to further strengthen the bilateral relationship in several areas, including energy, security, international aid and development, innovation and the promotion of human rights globally.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Canada firmly believes that the only viable path to lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians is through negotiations leading to two states living side by side in peace and prosperity.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

•<\/span> <\/span>During his visit to the West Bank in January 2014, Prime Minister Stephen Harper confirmed that Canada supports efforts to help advance peace between Israel and the Palestinians, promote security <\/span>and the rule of law, stimulate sustainable economic growth and deliver humanitarian assistance.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
