On 22 December, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov received Saeb Erekat, member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and Head of the organisation’s Negotiations Affairs Department, who arrived in Moscow at the instruction of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.<\/p><\/div>\n

The two diplomats focused on developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and prospects for a further Palestinian-Israeli peace process. Saeb Erekat described in detail the approaches his country uses to unblock the negotiations in light of a relevant draft Â鶹APP Security Council resolution, which was submitted on 17 December. The parties emphasised that the only way to resolve the Palestinian problem is political negotiation on a recognised international legal base.<\/p><\/div>\n

Mr Lavrov and Mr Erekat also discussed regional developments focusing on Syria, Iraq and the terrorism threat coming from extremist groups operating in the area.<\/p><\/div>\n
