\t<\/span>I have the honour to transmit to you herewith the text of a statement by the European Union on the Peace Treaty between Israel and Jordan issued on 27 October 1994.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I should be grateful if you could have the text of the present letter and its annex circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 38.<\/p><\/div>\n

Statement dated 27 October 1994 by the Presidency on<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

behalf of the European Union on the Peace Treaty<\/u>    <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

between Israel and Jordan<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The European Union warmly welcomes the signing of the Peace Treaty between Israel and Jordan, which represents a step of major significance towards just and lasting peace throughout the Middle East.  The European Union pays tribute to the commitment to peace demonstrated by the Jordanian and Israeli Governments, and to their efforts which have made it possible to conclude a peace treaty after so few months of intensive negotiations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The European Union is convinced that this Treaty will make an important contribution to political and economic stability in the region.  The European Union is confident that constructive bilateral relations between Israel and Jordan will develop rapidly, of which the main beneficiaries will be the people of the two countries and, in due course, regional cooperation as a whole.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The European Union hopes that the success of Israeli-Jordanian negotiations will encourage constructive progress in the other bilateral tracks of the peace process.  The European Union reconfirms its willingness to contribute to the success of the process through political and material support.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>In particular, the European Union takes note of the reference in the text of the Treaty to the achievements of the Union in the development of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE).  The European Union is ready to share its experience and expertise in this field with all regional parties in the Middle East.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The four acceding States associate themselves with this statement.<\/p><\/div>\n
