 Statement by the President of the Security Council<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

  At the 5270th meeting of the Security Council, held on 23 September 2005, in connection with the Council’s consideration of the item entitled “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question”, the President of the Security Council made the following statement on behalf of the Council: <\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t    “The Security Council supports the Statement issued in New York on 20 September 2005 by the Quartet, which is <\/span> <\/span>annexed<\/a> t<\/span>o this statement. <\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t    The Security Council urges the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority to cooperate, along with other parties concerned, with the efforts to achieve the goals set out in the Quartet Statement.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t    The Security Council calls for renewed action in parallel by the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority on their obligations in accordance with the <\/span>Road Map<\/a>, to ensure continued progress towards the creation of an independent, sovereign, democratic and viable State of Palestine living side by side with Israel in peace and security. <\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t    The Security Council stresses the importance of, and the need to achieve, a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the Middle East, based on all its relevant resolutions including its resolutions <\/span>242 (1967)<\/a>, <\/span>338 (1973)<\/a>, <\/span>1397 (2002)<\/a> and <\/span>1515 (2003)<\/a>, the Madrid terms of reference and the principle of land for peace .”<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
