QUESTION OF THE VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE OCCUPIED<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

ARAB TERRITORIES, INCLUDING PALESTINE<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Report of the Secretary-General<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

1.\t<\/span>At its fifty-first session, the Commission on Human Rights adopted resolution 1995\/2 entitled "Human rights in the occupied Syrian Golan".  By paragraph 6 of resolution 1995\/2, the Commission requested the Secretary-General to bring that resolution to the attention of all Governments, the competent Â鶹APP organs, the specialized agencies, regional intergovernmental organizations and international humanitarian organizations and to give it the widest possible publicity, and to report to the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty-second session.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

2.\t<\/span>In accordance with the requests of the Commission, the Secretary-General brought resolution 1995\/2 to the attention of all Governments, by a note verbale dated 15 May 1995.  It was also communicated to the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories and to the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

3.\t<\/span>Furthermore, the resolution was transmitted to all the specialized agencies and to the Â鶹APP Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.  In addition, the resolution was brought to the attention of competent regional intergovernmental organizations and international humanitarian organizations.<\/p><\/div>\n

4.\t<\/span>The Department of Public Information undertook the following activities:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(a)\t<\/span>The Department of Public Information continued to provide press coverage in English and French of all meetings of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories.  DPI also distributed Â鶹APP information materials, documents and press releases on the activities of the Special Committee to representatives of non-governmental organizations and to the public at large through its network of information centres and services;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(b)\t<\/span>Both at Headquarters and through the Â鶹APP information centres and services, the Department publicized the Special Committee's 1995 mission to the Middle East, contacting the NGO community, other Â鶹APP agencies and the public at large;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(c)\t<\/span>The Department of Public Information recently published a volume for the "Blue Book" series entitled "The Â鶹APP and Human Rights" which had been prepared by the Centre for Human Rights and which also refers to the work of the Special Committee.  DPI disseminated the book through appropriate channels including Â鶹APP information centres and services.<\/p><\/div>\n
