field-type-taxonomy-info\">\n<h6 style=\"text-align: right\">SG\/T\/3187<\/h6>\n<p>Late on Tuesday morning, 29\u00a0August, Âé¶¹APP Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres travelled by car from Jerusalem to Ramallah.<\/p>\n<p>He visited the \u201cOne-Stop Center\u201d in Ramallah, a project run by the Palestinian Authority with the support of the Âé¶¹APP Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women\u00a0(UN-Women), Âé¶¹APP Children\u2019s Fund\u00a0(UNICEF) and the Âé¶¹APP Development Programme\u00a0(UNDP). \u00a0The centre helps survivors of violence against women and girls, as well as at-risk youth. \u00a0The Secretary-General congratulated the Palestinian Civil Police and its Âé¶¹APP partners for creating an impressive programme that helps to protect women and children by providing them a safe space, as well as critical legal and mediation services. \u00a0He noted that not many countries have such programmes.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General then visited the Arafat Museum and laid a wreath at the tomb of the former Palestinian leader. \u00a0Following a tour of the museum, the Secretary-General\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/press-encounter\/2017-08-29\/secretary-general%E2%80%99s-remarks-press-yasser-arafat-museum\">told journalists<\/a>\u00a0that, when \u201cvisiting this museum, there are of course many emotions and many feelings, but the most important of them is the feeling of the suffering of the Palestinian people\u201d. \u00a0He added that he dreamt to see in the Holy Land two States: \u00a0A Palestinian State and Israeli State, living together in peace and security, in mutual recognition and allowing for this kind of suffering not to be possible anymore.<\/p>\n<p>While in Ramallah, the Secretary-General was hosted for a working lunch by the Prime Minister of the State of Palestine,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN_Spokesperson\/status\/902501954890461184\">Rami Hamdallah<\/a>. \u00a0At a press conference at the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, the Secretary-General\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/press-encounter\/2017-08-29\/secretary-general%E2%80%99s-remarks-press-conference-prime-minister\">reiterated<\/a>\u00a0his strong commitment, both personal and on behalf of the Âé¶¹APP, for a two-State solution. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve said several times that there is no plan\u00a0B to the two-State solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General expressed his deep belief that it is essential to restart a \u201cserious and credible\u201d political process of negotiation with the aim of achieving a two-State solution. \u00a0In parallel, he added, it is also important to create conditions on the ground to improve the situation of Palestinian populations.<\/p>\n<p>On Gaza, he said he remained very concerned with the humanitarian situation there. \u00a0\u201cWe are totally committed to support the [Âé¶¹APP Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East\u2019s]\u00a0(UNRWA) activity, as well as the activities of reconstruction that are taking place in Gaza,\u201d the Secretary-General said.<\/p>\n<p>Following the lunch, the Secretary-General met with representative of various youth organizations. \u00a0The Secretary-General listened as they explained the challenges they face and their frustration at both the on-going occupation, as well as the current political climate in the West Bank. \u00a0The Secretary-General commended them for their passion and encouraged them to be involved politically so as to serve the people.<\/p>\n<p>Before returning to Jerusalem, the Secretary-General had an opportunity to discuss the current situation with a group of prominent Palestinian personalities.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday morning, following a visit to southern Israel, the Secretary-General crossed into the Gaza Strip at Erez crossing. \u00a0He and his delegation went to the UNRWA school at Beit Lahiya, Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>In speaking to Âé¶¹APP staff in Gaza, he thanked them for their tremendous work in the face of so much adversity. \u00a0He stressed how proud he was to be their colleague.<\/p>\n<p>He then spent some time meeting a group of Gaza families which gave the Secretary-General a first-hand account of the daily challenges they face and the lack of opportunities for their children.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General also had a chance to meet with a group of Gaza student parliament members. \u00a0The 12 boys and girls took turns in explaining to the Secretary-General their hopes for the future. \u00a0He expressed how impressed he was with them and pledged that he would do his utmost to protect UNRWA so that it could continue to serve them.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to leaving Gaza, the Secretary-General\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/press-encounter\/2017-08-30\/secretary-general%E2%80%99s-remarks-press-unrwa-school\">spoke to the press<\/a>. \u00a0He told the journalists he is \u201cdeeply impressed by the suffering of the Gaza people\u201d. \u00a0Mr.\u00a0Guterres appealed to the international community to continue to support the Âé¶¹APP\u2019 work in Gaza. \u00a0To that end,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN_Spokesperson\/status\/902823833366798336\">he announced a $4\u00a0million grant<\/a>\u00a0from the Âé¶¹APP Central Emergency Response Fund.<\/p>\n<p>He underscored that solutions to Gaza\u2019s problems were, above all, political. \u00a0The Secretary-General called for a reconciliation between Gaza and the West Bank, under the principles of the Palestine Liberation Organization\u00a0(PLO). \u00a0He also reiterated his call for the resumption of a credible peace process, with accompanying programme of action to relieve the humanitarian
