SITUATION OVERVIEW
Critical supply and funding shortages persisted through June, deepening the humanitarian needs and compounding the suffering of Palestinians largely confined to a shrinking portion of Gaza. Kerem Shalom/ Karam Abu Salam remained the only operational crossing for cargo following the closure of Zikim crossing on 24 May. The access-restricted “Orange Line” was extended twice during June, reaching 64.9 per cent of the Gaza Strip by 23 June, with the Israeli leadership reportedly ordering a further expansion to cover up to 70 per cent of the land.
Most of Gaza’s population remained displaced across overcrowded sites, two thirds of which have . Rising summer temperatures and persistent use of open flames for cooking inside highly flammable tents saw an increase in domestic fire incidents. Addressing pest and rodent infestations a top priority response. However, these efforts were constrained by the lack of space in crowded sites and insufficient equipment needed to manage accumulated waste and debris, which provide breeding grounds for rodents and pests to multiply.
Shelter needs remained acute, with 70 per cent of the population lacking adequate shelter. Newly displaced families frequently fled without their tents or belongings, and prolonged restrictions on the entry of critical shelter materials continued to constrain the response.
Briefing the Security Council on 18 June, UN Relief Chief Tom Fletcher warned that Gaza was “being held together by humanitarian workarounds and Palestinian perseverance,” which was unsustainable, and that civilians could not wait for diplomacy to receive the basics for survival. He called for the immediate, full-capacity operation of multiple crossings, the removal of restrictions on essential survival items, and funding that is timely, flexible and commensurate with the scale of the crisis.
