Your Excellency, Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa, President of the Economic and Social Council,<\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Dear colleagues,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thank you for joining today\u2019s joint meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation: \u201cFrom Digital Inclusion to Innovation: Advancing Science, Technology and Youth Entrepreneurship for Development\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Allow me first and foremost to thank my Co-President and friend, His Excellency Lok Bahadur Thapa, and his Office. This joint meeting is our way to contribute to the overall effort of being more efficient and coherent, and to avoid unnecessary duplication between the General Assembly and ECOSOC, and we hope that this will be a blueprint for future processes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Famed microbiologist and chemist Louis Pasteur once said, \u201cscience knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure if you told this to a young person, they would agree.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They are at the age where youthful imagination meets young adult ambition, and in an era where, honestly, almost anything seems possible without borders and if we join hands in the understanding of our common humanity and in the spirit of being better together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And this is exactly the spirit we need these days.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We can see what we can achieve together, in the spirit of being better together not only here at the Â鶹APP but also around the world.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Just a few weeks ago, we all watched as human beings circled the moon, soaring further from the Earth than any person before\u2026 and from outer space, it was one earth, one planet.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We see it also in many other innovative fields.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Renewable energies, for example, once kicked off in one part of the world, especially in Europe, are now surging at the next level of innovation and investment, particularly in Asia. And being one of the success stories, also for outer continents especially Africa, to finally provide electricity for all people who were previously unconnected.<\/p>\n

In the health sector, for example, medications from Denmark\u2019s Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly of the United States, amongst others, could one day spell the end of obesity and related health conditions, for everyone.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Clearly, when knowledge is shared, and when innovation is driven collectively, the boundaries of what is possible expand to all of us, just as Louis Pasteur said, science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yet, we all know too well that this is not the reality everywhere.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While knowledge, science, and innovation may belong to all of humanity, their benefits have not reached all people equally.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some may race to the moon while others labour for electricity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some can use an app to open their blinds or check their fridge, while others have no phone at all.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That is why today\u2019s discussion matters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is about closing that divide and sharing the benefits, the wonders, of modern science, innovation, and technology with all.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So how do we do that?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How do we make real the idea that knowledge belongs to humanity \u2013 not only in principle, but in practice, a reality.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We do this by investing in capacities, particularly for young people. That means boosting education and financing science and research.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We do it by sharing technologies, and understanding that pooling our resources, technology, and know-how is the only clear path to a better future for all of us.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And we do it by tackling the barriers that persist, by putting in place a conducive policy environment for excellence and innovation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In short, we do it, bridging the divide, by delivering on the SDGs, on all of them.<\/p>\n

On this, I would point to the ongoing discussions, right here, around the International Migration Review Forum, because innovation is best if not thought in silos and not excluded by walls. Because well-governed migration is, in fact, a tool to foster science, innovation, and technology.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As a case in point, I would note the success of BioNTech, which developed the first widely used mRNA COVID-19 vaccine in partnership with Pfizer.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their company is based in Germany, however the founders, Dr. U\u011fur \u015eahin and Dr. \u00d6zlem T\u00fcreci, a married couple and medical scientists who are both children of Turkish immigrants.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their work helped save millions of lives across the globe, possible because of migration.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their story is remarkable, yet not unique.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Around the world, migrants are leading tech companies, piloting new medical procedures, and ushering in the next era of renewables.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Make no mistake, a pro-innovation ecosystem is one that leverages the potential of the world\u2019s brightest minds and fosters innovation wherever it comes from.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That includes migrants, to be sure, and it includes our own young people.<\/p>\n

It includes us here at the UN \u2013 you and your governments \u2013 for all of us, to ensure we have a common society and policy approach across all sectors.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Consider the \u201cSilicon Savannah\u201d in Kenya. There, tech startups such as iHub and M-Pesa are empowering young people and helping to solve some of the country\u2019s development needs, all while fostering a culture of innovation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indeed, their work on mobile banking has seen the number of people with access to a bank account jump from 42 per cent in 2011 to 75 per cent in 2014.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Or consider India\u2019s Space Research Organization, which has programmes specifically targeting young people to design, build, and potentially launch satellites.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These programmes include \u201cSpace on Wheels\u201d to reach remote, rural communities; the Yuvika young scientist programme; and specific initiatives to target women and girls in science.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What each of these examples reflects is an appreciation that not only is science, technology, and innovation something that belongs to all of humanity, as Pasteur has said, but that it is driven by all of humanity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is a communal undertaking that stands to benefit all of us, but only if we work together, only if we share the skills, the technology, the resources, and, of course, the benefits.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As there is no shortage of ideas\u2026 no lack of imagination around the world.<\/p>\n

All that is lacking is investment for upscaling it everywhere.<\/p>\n

All that is needed is support for us to join forces globally between sectors and countries to overcome the divide.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today\u2019s discussion is thus about meeting that support\u2026 about working together to foster solutions and innovations, wherever and from whomever they come.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because closing the digital and technological divide is not an act of charity,
\nit is a shared investment, an SDG accelerator, and an all-of-humanity endeavour. An effort to ensure that what belongs to humanity\u2026 is truly shared by humanity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
