Mr. President-elect,<\/span><\/p>\n

Madame Deputy Secretary-General,<\/span><\/p>\n

Excellencies, Distinguished\u00a0<\/span>d<\/span>elegates,<\/span><\/p>\n

Dear colleagues<\/span>\u00a0and friends,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am proud to stand before you for the last meeting of the 77th<\/sup>\u00a0session of the General Assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I want to leave you with five main thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The first is that,\u00a0despite geopolitical rivalries, our survival depends on our cooperation.<\/u><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

We have ample scientific evidence that we are well in the Anthropocene era \u2013 an age marked by humans\u2019\u00a0<\/span>decisive impact on the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginning of my term, I invited you to view our work through the lenses of crisis management and the sustainability transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Such an approach could allow us to counter the global crises of our own making.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Geopolitical rivalries are part of the reality, but let us not forget, they block many prospects of the necessary solutions and urgent cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shifting our focus away from sustainability transformation, geopolitical or ideological competition usually pursues more narrow, often short-term interests.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, at the Water Conference in March, you demonstrated that it is possible to overcome long-standing divides.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have already shown that we can reestablish trust and build on areas of common ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This brings me to my second message that<\/b><\/span>\u00a0we are in a race against time<\/u>.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From climate change and biodiversity loss to education and gender equality \u2013 our chance to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 is slipping away.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019<\/span>s put money where our promises are. For the benefit of each and every Member State.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are\u00a0we ready to translate the necessary actions for sustainability transformation into key budgeting priorities?\u00a0Back at home and in the international organizations?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Supporting sustainable development with appropriate regulations, financing, capacity building and verification is one of our most urgent tasks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is immediately needed now is implementation of what we promised to deliver to our 8 billion shareholders.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are starting to value what counts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And we are beginning to understand that we should go\u00a0\u201c<\/span>beyond GDP\u201d to understand the real impacts and the full cost of our actions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Including all positive and negative side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Intended and unintended ones alike.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And it means we are starting to place our trust in science and data.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The next eight to ten years will be crucial for our shared perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And let us make it clear: multilateralism is our only option to tackle the many crises of the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My third message is that\u00a0we are all responsible for our actions and inactions<\/u>.<\/b><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our responsibilities must always be regarded as important as our rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0three pillars of\u00a0the\u00a0Â鶹APP are peace and security, development, and human rights.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The public sees these as our responsibilities. Have we lived up to them?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can we look at the conflicts around the world and say we are upholding the UN Charter?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The war in Ukraine \u2013 along with other 51 armed conflicts – must end, in line with the UN Charter and international law.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today I reiterate my call on all of you to end nuclear proliferation and nuclear armament.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The UN Charter empowers the General Assembly to consider principles governing disarmament and arms control.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I encourage the Assembly to reflect on this point.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In December, 75 years will have passed since the General Assembly proclaimed the Universal Declaration o<\/span>f<\/span>\u00a0Human Rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t this anniversary a reminder that the security of our future will depend on how we embrace our responsibilities?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just a year ago, the General Assembly\u00a0<\/span>adopted a historic resolution declaring access to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment a universal human right.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it should be made clear who is responsible for the implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent months, you agreed to seek the opinion of the International Court of Justice on countries<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>obligations to address climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are only starting to understand and unpack what rights and responsibilities will mean in the next stage of our Anthropocene era.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Increasingly, it is our young people, who remind us when we fail to act.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They will hold us accountable for our inactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My fourth message is that\u00a0only integrated solutions are\u00a0\u2018<\/span>future-proof\u2019<\/span><\/u>.<\/b><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They are forward-looking and able to absorb upcoming shocks.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The multilateral system demands cooperation on a global scale \u2013 between countries and regions but also across disciplines and fields.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With a well-developed methodology bringing together data and trends from these fields.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From addressing climate change and cyber-crime, to respecting human rights online and the use of artificial intelligence, we must unite around a holistic approach.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside this Hall, people see one UN and expect us to act together to support meaningful change in their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our focus this session has been on finding integrated solutions that have concrete impact for your citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We know that stand-alone processes will only deliver stand-alone results.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Integrated solutions, again, mean data, verification and funding.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the upcoming SDG Summit, it will be up to you, Member States, to bring the sustainability transformation to life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For the survival of humanity, are you willing to finance it?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In each and every country, by reprioritizing spending, and strengthening international cooperation on sustainability?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Will you do more to verify what you are implementing?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you break out of artificial silos in favor of comprehensive solutions<\/span>?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If so, the time to redefine our priorities and actions is now.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I encourage you to keep the focus on integrated solutions if you want to have the best results for your resources<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and if you want to change the reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My fifth message is that\u00a0we must urgently reform the UN<\/u>\u00a0in ways that correspond with the challenges of our day.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The world\u2019s first passenger jet aircraft carried 36 passengers in 1952.\u00a0<\/span>That\u00a0<\/span>was a breakthrough in technological development. That doesn\u2019t mean that we can use it today to take us to Mars.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Times are evolving, and this Organization must evolve with them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We must reform how the General Assembly functions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The same is true for the Security Council.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I acknowledge that the UN Charter does not make this task easy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But even then, until we change it, our task is to\u00a0apply it<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This means avoiding its selective application on conflict management, mass atrocities, genocide and other war crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If we do not, the Security Council will be more of a problem than a solution to our world\u2019<\/span>s instability.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails,\u201d as they say.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let us adjust our own sails here in the General Assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These questions speak to the need for integration and reform throughout the UN, to repair trust within \u2013 and in \u2013 our organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And to preserve its relevance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let us admit that a policymaking body with more than 180 priorities has no strategic direction.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inherited and repetitive debates occupy too much of our time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, they are important. But should they prevent us from seeking gamechangers for our current and new situations on the horizon?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We cannot miss the forest through the trees.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reinforcing old positions of ancient debates invariably means\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>we will lose sight of current challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who will suffer the most? The most vulnerable countries and communities, there is no doubt about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Please, keep this in mind when you sacrifice collaboration and try turning it into a zero-sum game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We cannot expect different results through rigid reiterations of positions, by holding on to \u201cagreed language\u201d,\u00a0\u201c<\/span>longstanding\u201d as they may be.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen, let me wrap up.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There will always be political rivalries.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This does not mean that we have to fall into the zero-sum trap, in which one country\u2019<\/span>s every gain is another country\u2019<\/span>s loss.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Smart decision-making, starting with consensus on key resolutions here in the General Assembly Hall, is the push needed for many actors in the world to embrace upcoming challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We must set the tone.<\/s><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And to create a more effective sustainable transformation that is mutually beneficial for all of us.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This must be done now because we are racing against time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no plan B, no planet<\/i>\u00a0B, as we hear often.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Global finance isn\u2019<\/span>t yet working to help us with climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nor to protect the most vulnerable.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which is why we have to act with urgency, to protect our joint survival.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our actions and inactions invoke the issue of responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To the planet, and to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is accountability.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When international law or the UN Charter is violated, and we do nothing \u2013 we are hiding from our common responsibility, we are all eroding our multilateral system.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And we are deceiving the people we represent.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This omission brings into question our relevance, our purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is why this great Organization needs to reform in line with the challenges of today and tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We need to be agile.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How do we organize this reform?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among others, through science.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is my core message to you today, as it has been since I stood in this same hall one year ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Science is one of the most important shapers of our understanding of reality upon which basic decisions should be made.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Science is not omnipotent but provides objective evidence and proven knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the tool to help us leverage our cooperation and guide our decision-making.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not against anyone\u2019s national or cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the way for us to reflect the heritage in our decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019<\/span>ve let science in this term, let\u2019<\/span>s not push it out in the next ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me take a moment now to say thank you.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To you, the Member States, I want to remind you that the outcomes of your negotiations, meetings, informal and thematic events, are our solutions to the world\u2019<\/span><\/span>s problems.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The General Assembly resolutions are your shared blueprint, your joint legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This term, I appointed thirty co-facilitators and co-chairs for the different negotiation processes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On behalf of all of you I thank them and their teams for their dedication and determination throughout the last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thank you for this cooperation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me express my deep gratitude to the Vice-Presidents of the Assembly, the Chairs of the Main Committees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am grateful for the Secretary<\/span>–<\/span>General and the Deputy Secretary<\/span>–<\/span>General for their trust, frank and impact-oriented cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also thank the colleagues at the Secretariat, especially at the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, whose guidance and support have been most helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A special thank should go to the Members of my Gender Advisory Board.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And I want to thank my team.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you like what my Office did this term, the support you received, the guidance, the creativity, it is because I had a very good team.<\/span><\/p>\n

And two-thirds of it was comprised of women. Many of them mothers.<\/span><\/p>\n

We even had three new-born babies during the session.<\/span><\/p>\n

A reminder of who we are leaving this world to.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the greatest symbol of hope.<\/span><\/p>\n

I wish my successor, President-elect Ambassador Dennis Francis a very productive presidency, and I wish you all success and decisions all of you will be proud of.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0three pillars of\u00a0the\u00a0Â鶹APP are peace and security, development, and human rights.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The public sees these as our responsibilities. Have we lived up to them?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Can we look at the conflicts around the world and say we are upholding the UN Charter?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The war in Ukraine \u2013 along with other 51 armed conflicts - must end, in line with the UN Charter and international law.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Today I reiterate my call on all of you to end nuclear proliferation and nuclear armament.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The UN Charter empowers the General Assembly to consider principles governing disarmament and arms control.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I encourage the Assembly to reflect on this point.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In December, 75 years will have passed since the General Assembly proclaimed the Universal Declaration o<\/span>f<\/span>\u00a0Human Rights.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Isn\u2019t this anniversary a reminder that the security of our future will depend on how we embrace our responsibilities?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Just a year ago, the General Assembly\u00a0<\/span>adopted a historic resolution declaring access to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment a universal human right.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

But it should be made clear who is responsible for the implementation.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In recent months, you agreed to seek the opinion of the International Court of Justice on countries<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>obligations to address climate change.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We are only starting to understand and unpack what rights and responsibilities will mean in the next stage of our Anthropocene era.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Increasingly, it is our young people, who remind us when we fail to act.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

They will hold us accountable for our inactions.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My fourth message is that\u00a0only integrated solutions are\u00a0\u2018<\/span>future-proof\u2019<\/span><\/u>.<\/b><\/span><\/b><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

They are forward-looking and able to absorb upcoming shocks.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The multilateral system demands cooperation on a global scale \u2013 between countries and regions but also across disciplines and fields.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

With a well-developed methodology bringing together data and trends from these fields.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

From addressing climate change and cyber-crime, to respecting human rights online and the use of artificial intelligence, we must unite around a holistic approach.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Outside this Hall, people see one UN and expect us to act together to support meaningful change in their lives.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our focus this session has been on finding integrated solutions that have concrete impact for your citizens.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We know that stand-alone processes will only deliver stand-alone results.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Integrated solutions, again, mean data, verification and funding.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Beyond the upcoming SDG Summit, it will be up to you, Member States, to bring the sustainability transformation to life.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the survival of humanity, are you willing to finance it?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In each and every country, by reprioritizing spending, and strengthening international cooperation on sustainability?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Will you do more to verify what you are implementing?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Can you break out of artificial silos in favor of comprehensive solutions<\/span>?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

If so, the time to redefine our priorities and actions is now.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I encourage you to keep the focus on integrated solutions if you want to have the best results for your resources<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and if you want to change the reality.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My fifth message is that\u00a0we must urgently reform the UN<\/u>\u00a0in ways that correspond with the challenges of our day.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The world\u2019s first passenger jet aircraft carried 36 passengers in 1952.\u00a0<\/span>That\u00a0<\/span>was a breakthrough in technological development. That doesn\u2019t mean that we can use it today to take us to Mars.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Times are evolving, and this Organization must evolve with them.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We must reform how the General Assembly functions.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The same is true for the Security Council.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I acknowledge that the UN Charter does not make this task easy.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

But even then, until we change it, our task is to\u00a0apply it<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This means avoiding its selective application on conflict management, mass atrocities, genocide and other war crimes.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

If we do not, the Security Council will be more of a problem than a solution to our world\u2019<\/span>s instability.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201c<\/span><\/span>The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails,\u201d as they say.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Let us adjust our own sails here in the General Assembly.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These questions speak to the need for integration and reform throughout the UN, to repair trust within \u2013 and in \u2013 our organization.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And to preserve its relevance.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Let us admit that a policymaking body with more than 180 priorities has no strategic direction.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Inherited and repetitive debates occupy too much of our time.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Yes, they are important. But should they prevent us from seeking gamechangers for our current and new situations on the horizon?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We cannot miss the forest through the trees.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Reinforcing old positions of ancient debates invariably means\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>we will lose sight of current challenges.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Who will suffer the most? The most vulnerable countries and communities, there is no doubt about it.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Please, keep this in mind when you sacrifice collaboration and try turning it into a zero-sum game.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We cannot expect different results through rigid reiterations of positions, by holding on to \u201cagreed language\u201d,\u00a0\u201c<\/span>longstanding\u201d as they may be.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Ladies and gentlemen, let me wrap up.<\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There will always be political rivalries.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This does not mean that we have to fall into the zero-sum trap, in which one country\u2019<\/span>s every gain is another country\u2019<\/span>s loss.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Smart decision-making, starting with consensus on key resolutions here in the General Assembly Hall, is the push needed for many actors in the world to embrace upcoming challenges.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We must set the tone.<\/s><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And to create a more effective sustainable transformation that is mutually beneficial for all of us.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This must be done now because we are racing against time.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There is no plan B, no planet<\/i>\u00a0B, as we hear often.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Global finance isn\u2019<\/span>t yet working to help us with climate change.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Nor to protect the most vulnerable.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Which is why we have to act with urgency, to protect our joint survival.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our actions and inactions invoke the issue of responsibility.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

To the planet, and to each other.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That is accountability.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When international law or the UN Charter is violated, and we do nothing \u2013 we are hiding from our common responsibility, we are all eroding our multilateral system.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And we are deceiving the people we represent.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This omission brings into question our relevance, our purpose.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That is why this great Organization needs to reform in line with the challenges of today and tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We need to be agile.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

How do we organize this reform?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Among others, through science.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That is my core message to you today, as it has been since I stood in this same hall one year ago.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Science is one of the most important shapers of our understanding of reality upon which basic decisions should be made.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Science is not omnipotent but provides objective evidence and proven knowledge.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It is the tool to help us leverage our cooperation and guide our decision-making.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It is not against anyone\u2019s national or cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It is the way for us to reflect the heritage in our decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We\u2019<\/span>ve let science in this term, let\u2019<\/span>s not push it out in the next ones.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Let me take a moment now to say thank you.<\/b><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

To you, the Member States, I want to remind you that the outcomes of your negotiations, meetings, informal and thematic events, are our solutions to the world\u2019<\/span><\/span>s problems.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The General Assembly resolutions are your shared blueprint, your joint legacy.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This term, I appointed thirty co-facilitators and co-chairs for the different negotiation processes.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

On behalf of all of you I thank them and their teams for their dedication and determination throughout the last year.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Thank you for this cooperation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Let me express my deep gratitude to the Vice-Presidents of the Assembly, the Chairs of the Main Committees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I am grateful for the Secretary<\/span>-<\/span>General and the Deputy Secretary<\/span>-<\/span>General for their trust, frank and impact-oriented cooperation.<\/span><\/p>

We even had three new-born babies during the session.<\/span><\/p>
