\u201cIt\u2019s hot out.<\/p>\n

Not just regular summer hot.<\/p>\n

Temperatures are at record high across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re being familiarized with what prolonged heat domes mean.<\/p>\n

Is this all climate change?<\/p>\n

No, of course not. Climate change is not an extreme event. It is the tendency what we are witnessing, and its pace is growing.<\/p>\n

Scientists had warned us that climate change will mean more frequent and deadlier heatwaves. More wild fires, more devastating hurricanes, typhoons and faster melting of ice caps.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because we are changing the composition of the atmosphere. Emitting record amount of greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n

We burn trillions of tons of fossil fuels \u2013 like coal and oil \u2013 and they release CO2 and other GHGs that trap the heat in our atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Unless we break this cycle, we will have even more record weather extremes.<\/p>\n

That means we will move further and further away from the climate we\u2019re used to.<\/p>\n

As the President of the General Assembly, I call on the international community to act.<\/p>\n

From governments, companies, civil society groups, scientists, to you listening\u2026 It\u2019s all our responsibility to act to stop climate change.<\/p>\n

For Member States and all stakeholders attending the SDG Summit: Come with concrete proposals and transform the way we do business.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t talk a lot of hot air.<\/p>\n
