{"id":254266,"date":"2023-06-16T13:56:17","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T17:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=254266"},"modified":"2023-06-16T14:23:06","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T18:23:06","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-16-june-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/16\/noon-briefing-highlights-16-june-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 16 June 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nÂ鶹APP Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Friday, 16 June 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DESERTIFICATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting with the General Assembly where there is today a high-level event in observance of World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.<\/p>\n<p>The actual day is tomorrow, 17 June.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si called land degradation a threat not only to our food security, livelihoods, ecosystems, and biodiversity \u2013 but to our existence as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Land degradation wipes out the wisdom that has lived beneath us for millennia, and with it \u2013 our hope for the future.<\/p>\n<p>The President spoke personally, noting that he comes from a family of farmers, who understood the values that land offered, and respected the forces of nature.<\/p>\n<p>Given this year\u2019s theme of \u201cher land, her rights\u201d, the President pointed to empirical research which proves that strengthening women\u2019s land and property rights increases food security and reduces malnourishment.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the international community has to support women\u2019s land tenure\u2026 and to remove the barriers to women\u2019s participation in decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>Quote: \u201cAs we mark this Desertification and Drought Day, I urge you to recognize women\u2019s contributions to the sustainable management of land and the broader achievement of our 2030 Agenda.<\/p>\n<p>And I call upon you to promote laws and policies that give us a fighting chance at leaving no one behind.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot let this foundational promise dry out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You have the full remarks in your inbox: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/16\/pga-remarks-on-desertification-and-drought\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/16\/pga-remarks-on-desertification-and-drought\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WEEK AHEAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On Monday, 19 June\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At 10AM ET in the ECOSOC,<\/strong> President K\u0151r\u00f6si will speak to the resumed 5<sup>th<\/sup> session of the Intergovernmental Conference on an international legally binding instrument under the Â鶹APP Convention of the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction \u2026 so the BBNJ.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At 11AM in the Trusteeship, <\/strong>President K\u0151r\u00f6si will participate in the high-level event marking the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> International Day for Countering Hate Speech. The President will give remarks.<\/p>\n<p>And you just heard from the UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu, about the event and the supporting social media campaign against hate speech, and other events related to genocide prevention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At 4PM,<\/strong> there will be an event on Women in Diplomacy, it is the first time that this International Day is marked at the Â鶹APP, since its creation in 2022. The event is organized by the Circle of Women Ambassadors in partnership with UN-Women and the Office of the President. President K\u0151r\u00f6si will have remarks. The Member States that are co-organizing this event include: the Permanent Missions of the Bahamas, El Salvador, Eritrea, Guyana, Kenya, Latvia, Malawi, Maldives, Malta, Qatar, Saint Lucia and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>And in the back is our fellow Nathalie Gasaro, who will play a big role in the event, moderating some of the discussions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the evening,<\/strong> there will be a concert in the GA Hall to mark Monaco\u2019s entry to the Â鶹APP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On Wednesday, 21 June\u2026 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting at 8AM, we will mark the 9<sup>th<\/sup> International Day of Yoga. You know that Indian Prime Minister Modi will be here to lead the event. President K\u0151r\u00f6si will be participating. He always laughs that he is not a yogi. But you might have seen his tweet saying that he looks forward to participating in the yoga celebrations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday 22 June\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At 10AM ET in the GA Hall\u2026 Member States will take action on a resolution related to the 8<sup>th<\/sup> review of the Global Counter Terrorism Strategy. President K\u0151r\u00f6si will have remarks to that meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>NO MONDAY PGA BRIEFING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And despite the very busy Monday, I will not be here.
