21 September 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n Minister Bayramov,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Under-Secretary-General DiCarlo,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Let me start by thanking Minister Bayramov of Azerbaijan, Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, for establishing a platform of inclusive dialogue, and for inviting me to address this distinguished audience today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n I particularly commend Azerbaijan\u2019s leadership for realizing two landmark initiatives: the creation of the <\/span><\/span>NAM Youth Organization<\/span><\/span>and the <\/span><\/span>NAM Parliamentary Network<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Dating back to 1961, NAM has a prominent history of leadership and solidarity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Its influence has been <\/span><\/span>convincingly<\/span><\/span> display<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span> in recent years, for example when it led the convening of the General Assembly Special Session on the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n When the world needed it the most, NAM quickly galvanized efforts to address the crisis, calling for enhancing international cooperation and solidarity to overcome the pandemic. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n It called for responses that were people-centered, gender-sensitive, <\/span><\/span>coordinated<\/span><\/span> and inclusive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n But COVID-19 was just a window, a short glimpse into our future<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>the first of many similar challenges to come.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Building on our joint efforts and experience, we need to be prepared to manage the many interlocking crises that will hit us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n That is why I welcome the upcoming High<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Level Meeting on pandemic prevention, <\/span><\/span>preparedness<\/span><\/span> and response. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Its goal will be to mobilize political will at national, <\/span><\/span>regional<\/span><\/span> and international levels to prevent or to curtail future pandemics.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Excellencies, Dear Friends,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The return of deadly viruses is not the only risk our world is facing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Our very real challenges of today span a wide variety: escalating conflicts, the war in Ukraine with its many consequences, global crises of food and hunger, skyrocketing energy prices and the devastating effects of climate change.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Political and security tensions are the highest they have been in decades. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Inflation shows no signs of abating.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n It is against this backdrop that NAM\u2019s voice of solidarity and cooperation will be as critical as never before. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n NAM has the power to effectively shift the balance from mistrust and confrontation to dialogue and collaboration.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n I welcome NAM strength at the <\/span><\/span>Â鶹APP. Not only in its numerical representation, but in its firm commitment to the Â鶹APP Charter. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The UN Charter is the <\/span><\/span>solid<\/span><\/span> ground on which we stand.
