Por ello, este proceso que hoy culmina, m\u00e1s que una competencia, representa una celebraci\u00f3n de los principios fundacionales de nuestra Organizaci\u00f3n. En consecuencia, esta votaci\u00f3n ha sido un acto de fortalecimiento del multilateralismo. Por esta raz\u00f3n, todos los Estados hemos ganado porque, al fortalecer las Naciones Unidas, estamos avanzando en la construcci\u00f3n de sus pilares de paz y seguridad, desarrollo y derechos humanos en beneficio de nuestros pueblos y nuestra casa com\u00fan, el planeta Tierra.<\/p>\n<p>Agradezco profundamente el voto de confianza que hoy los Estados Miembros han epositado en el Ecuador para presidir esta Asamblea. Agradezco las m\u00e1s generosas expresiones de respaldo y confianza de los pa\u00edses de mi querida regi\u00f3n de Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe y de todas las regiones del mundo.<\/p>\n<p>Sr. Presidente, deseo felicitarlo por su liderazgo al frente de esta Asamblea. Usted ha hecho posible la celebraci\u00f3n, por primera vez en la historia, de un di\u00e1logo interactivo con las candidatas a presidir el pr\u00f3ximo per\u00edodo de sesiones. Por ello, esta elecci\u00f3n constituye tambi\u00e9n un paso m\u00e1s en el proceso de revitalizaci\u00f3n de la Asamblea General.<\/p>\n<p>Quiero agradecer de manera especial a la Embajadora Elizabeth Flores por su compromiso con la Organizaci\u00f3n y con la Asamblea General a trav\u00e9s de su participaci\u00f3n en este proceso de elecci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>En el d\u00eda de hoy, con su respaldo, me convierto en la cuarta mujer en ser elegida para este cargo en 73 a\u00f1os de vida de las Naciones Unidas. Adem\u00e1s, me convertir\u00e9 en la primera mujer de Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe en presidir esta Asamblea. Ojal\u00e1 que la paridad avance y que, finalmente, hombres y mujeres por igual hayamos tenido la oportunidad de dirigirnos a este foro, como hoy tengo el honor de hacerlo, gracias al apoyo de la Asamblea. Por este motivo, quiero dedicar esta elecci\u00f3n a todas las mujeres del mundo que hoy participan en pol\u00edtica y que se enfrentan a los ataques pol\u00edticos y medi\u00e1ticos marcados por el machismo y la discriminaci\u00f3n. Quisiera rendir un homenaje especial tambi\u00e9n a las mujeres que luchan cada d\u00eda por acceder a puestos de trabajo en igualdad de condiciones, a las mujeres y ni\u00f1as v\u00edctimas de la violencia, a las ni\u00f1as y adolescentes que demandan acceso a informaci\u00f3n y educaci\u00f3n de calidad. Mi compromiso estar\u00e1 siempre con ellas.<\/p>\n<p>Quisiera agradecer al pueblo ecuatoriano y a nuestro Presidente Lenin Moreno Garc\u00e9s por la confianza mostrada al haber propuesto a su Canciller para representar al Ecuador en este digno cargo. Las llamadas diarias del Presidente Moreno para conocer personalmente de los avances de esta candidatura y su inter\u00e9s directo en este proceso demuestran su gran compromiso y amor por el Ecuador y tambi\u00e9n por el multilateralismo. Quiero expresar mi especial agradecimiento al equipo de la Misi\u00f3n Permanente del Ecuador ante las Naciones Unidas y a su Representante Permanente, por el trabajo intenso y comprometido, a nuestros Embajadores y al personal del servicio exterior alrededor del mundo, as\u00ed como al equipo del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores en Quito, que trabajaron estas semanas movilizando el apoyo que hoy hemos alcanzado para esta candidatura.<\/p>\n<p>Ofrec\u00ed una Presidencia de puertas abiertas y as\u00ed lo har\u00e9. Adem\u00e1s, hoy reitero mi compromiso de actuar como facilitadora imparcial, objetiva y abierta. Los presentes lo saben: adem\u00e1s de pol\u00edtica soy poeta. Como tal, tengo plena consciencia de que ninguna mirada sirve si no observamos y de que ninguna palabra tiene valor si no escuchamos. Yo estar\u00e9 lista para escuchar a todos los representantes y para trabajar para ellos y con ellos. Quiero garantizar a las delegaciones que impulsar\u00e9 todas las acciones que est\u00e9n a mi alcance para que la Asamblea desempe\u00f1e un rol central para avanzar hacia el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.<\/p>\n<p>Sr. Presidente: Deseo felicitarlo por su labor, visi\u00f3n y esfuerzo permanente durante este per\u00edodo. Tenemos el reto de construir una Organizaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s fuerte y m\u00e1s eficiente. El fortalecimiento del multilateralismo no es una opci\u00f3n, es una obligaci\u00f3n. Por ello, es urgente que las Naciones Unidas muestren capacidad para responder a los principales desaf\u00edos globales y que la Organizaci\u00f3n se acerque m\u00e1s a la gente, conectando sus decisiones directamente a sus beneficiarios, que son los ciudadanos y las ciudadanas. Por ello, como he se\u00f1alado en este proceso de elecci\u00f3n, cada una de mis acciones tendr\u00e1 presente que los destinatarios principales de nuestros compromisos y decisiones son nuestros pueblos. Es a ellos a quienes nos debemos.<\/p>\n<p>Una vez m\u00e1s, estoy profundamente agradecida por esta designaci\u00f3n. Frente a la Asamblea, asumo el compromiso de trabajar por el bien com\u00fan y por los principios y pilares de nuestra Organizaci\u00f3n. The process that we are concluding today therefore represents a celebration, more than a competition, of the founding principles of our Organization. Accordingly, this vote has been an act that strengthens multilateralism. For that reason, all States win, because by strengthening the Â鶹APP we are making progress in building up its pillars of peace and security, development and human rights for the benefit of our peoples and our common home, planet Earth.<\/p><p>I deeply appreciate the vote of confidence that Member States have placed in Ecuador today to preside over the Assembly. I appreciate the very generous expressions of support and confidence from the countries of my beloved region of Latin America and the Caribbean and from every region of the world.<\/p><p>I would like to congratulate you, Mr. President, on your stewardship of the Assembly. For the first time in history, you have made it possible for us to hold an interactive dialogue with the candidates for the leadership of the Assembly at its next session. This election is therefore also another step in the process of the revitalization of the General Assembly. I want to express my special thanks to Ambassador Elizabeth Flores for her commitment to the Organization and to the General Assembly through her participation in this election process.<\/p><p>Today, with the Assembly\u2019s support, I become the fourth woman to be elected to this position in the 73 years of the existence of the Â鶹APP. I will also be the first woman from Latin America and the Caribbean to preside over the Assembly. I hope that this parity will continue to make progress and that men and women alike will at last have the opportunity to address this forum equally, as I have the honour to do so today, thanks to the Assembly\u2019s support. For that reason, I would like to dedicate this election to all the women in the world who are participating in politics today and who face political and media attacks marred by machismo and discrimination. I would like to pay a special tribute to the women who struggle every day to access jobs on equal terms; to the women and girls who are victims of violence; to the girls and adolescents who are demanding access to quality information and education. I will always be committed to them.<\/p><p>I would like to thank the Ecuadorian people and our President, Lenin Moreno Garc\u00e9s, for their confidence in proposing their Minister for Foreign Affairs to represent Ecuador in this distinguished position. President Moreno\u2019s daily telephone calls to enable him to stay personally informed about the progress of my candidature, and his direct interest in the process, demonstrate his great commitment to and his love for Ecuador and multilateralism. My special thanks go to the team of the Permanent Mission of Ecuador to the Â鶹APP and its Permanent Representative for their intense and committed work; to our ambassadors and foreign service personnel around the world, and to the Foreign Ministry team in Quito, who have been working in the past few weeks to mobilize the support that we achieved today for my candidature.<\/p><p>I offered an open-door presidency and I will keep that promise. In addition, today I reiterate my commitment to acting as an impartial, objective and open facilitator. As many of those here know, in addition to being a politician, I am also a poet. As such, I am fully aware that no view is useful if we do not see, and no words have value if we do not listen. I will be ready to listen to all representatives and to work for them and with them. I want to assure delegations that I will promote every action within my reach so that the Assembly can play a central role in advancing towards the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p><p>I want to congratulate you, Mr. President, on your work, vision and ongoing effort during this period. I put my time and energy entirely at your disposal to work together with you in this period of transition in order to ensure continuity for your excellent work and results. It is an honour for me to have the challenge of succeeding you, and I hope that I will be able to rely on your experience throughout my term.<\/p><p>As I mentioned in the interactive dialogue, the bodies of the Â鶹APP must run like clockwork, like cogs in a single, well-oiled machine moving the Organization towards the objectives of its foundational Charter. I am sure, therefore, that I will work hand in hand with the Secretary-General to promote the reforms and processes that are necessary to strengthen the Organization. I would also like to congratulate the Secretary-General on his example of entrepreneurship and his courage in seeking to achieve the best results rather than the easiest. I pledge to support his initiatives, according to the mandate I receive from Member States.<\/p><p>One of my greatest challenges will certainly be providing support to States in the implementation of the reforms of the Â鶹APP system. We have the challenge of building a stronger and more efficient Organization. Strengthening multilateralism is not an option but an obligation. It is therefore urgent that the Â鶹APP show the ability to respond to the main global challenges, and that the Organization be brought closer to the people, connecting its decisions directly to its beneficiaries, the citizens of the world. As I stated in this election process, therefore, each and every one of my actions will bear in mind the fact that the main recipients of our commitments and decisions are our peoples. We are working for them.<\/p><p>Once again, I am deeply grateful to the Assembly for this appointment. Before the Assembly, I pledge to work for the common good and for the principles and pillars of our Organization.
