It should not be a principle or an aim or an outcome. It should not have a budget \u2013 or a timeline.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cInstead, peace should be something that we can touch, see, feel and experience \u2013 on a daily basis. It should be in the air around us \u2013 or the ground we walk on. It should, in essence, be a culture. And one that is here to stay.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Also speaking in the opening session were the Secretary-General\u2019s Chef de Cabinet and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Rigoberta Mench\u00fa.<\/li>\n<li>There will also be a panel discussion this afternoon in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.<\/li>\n<li>The panellists will include the UN\u2019s Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, the Permanent Representatives of Kenya and Mexico, the Director of UNESCO\u2019s Office in New York, and the Director of the Peace and Justice Institute in Orlando, Florida.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT PACT COULD BE GOOD FOR PLANET<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The General Assembly\u2019s process to address possible gaps in international environmental law and environmental related instruments started this morning.<\/li>\n<li>This is in accordance with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ga\/search\/view_doc.asp?symbol=A\/RES\/72\/277\">General Assembly\u2019s resolution<\/a> from last May, entitled \u201cTowards a Global Pact for the Environment\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>In his <a href=\"\/pga\/72?p=165484\">remarks<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/08\/PGA-cover-letter-organizational-session-of-AHWG-Global-Pact-for-the-Environment-1.pdf\">that meeting<\/a> today, the President said a Global Pact for the Environment would have the potential to create more coherence and integration among our various agreements and mechanisms.<\/li>\n<li>He added that the Pact could also \u201callow us to pick up the pace, in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. And it could give us the push forward that we need\u2013 as we adopt new economic models.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In short, the Pact could allow us to \u201chand our planet over in as good a \u2013 or even better \u2013 condition than we ourselves inherited,\u201d the President said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>IMPROVEMENTS MAKE GENERAL ASSEMBLY HALL MORE ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The President is hosting a working lunch today on accessibility of the Â鶹APP and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the work of the Organization.<\/li>\n<li>Attendees will include representatives of Member States, the UN Secretariat and persons with disabilities \u2013 as well as the President-elect of the General Assembly\u2019s 73rd session.<\/li>\n<li>President Laj\u010d\u00e1k is expected to say that the UN has spoken about disability rights, and disability and development. But it needs to lead by example.<\/li>\n<li>On a related note, changes were made to the General Assembly Hall last month \u2013 to make it more accessible for wheelchair users. Those changes were encouraged by President Laj\u010d\u00e1k.<\/li>\n<li>They include the addition of: a portable ramp and lift to the front rostrum, as well as a platform for speakers; a permanent wheelchair lift to the top podium; a ramp to the back of the GA-200 area; and floating wheelchair adviser seats for delegations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>REVIEW OF PRESIDENT\u2019S FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE STATEMENT COMPLETED<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The review of the President\u2019s financial disclosure statement has now been completed by an external reviewer.<\/li>\n<li>The President had submitted that statement to the Ethics Office last month, for external review.<\/li>\n<li>This was in line with General Assembly resolution 70\/305 on \u201cRevitalization of the work of the General Assembly\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>According to that resolution, the Assembly \u201cdecides that Presidents of the General Assembly shall provide financial disclosures upon assumption and completion of their duties, in line with the existing Â鶹APP financial disclosure programme\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The external reviewer said it would inform the UN Ethics Office that President Laj\u010d\u00e1k\u2019s file has been cleared of conflicts of interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>ANTI-NUCLEAR TEST DAY TO BE OBSERVED TOMORROW<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Tomorrow the President will convene a High-level Meeting to Commemorate and Promote the International Day Against Nuclear Tests<\/li>\n<li>The actual day was on 29 August, but it is being observed tomorrow.<\/li>\n<li>In addition to the President, the Secretary-General, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Executive Secretary and the ATOM Project\u2019s Honorary Ambassador will speak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243;][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;3.12.2&#8243;]\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" src=\"\/\/www.un.org\/webcast\/1362235914001\/B1J3DDQJf_default\/index.html?videoId=5831110565001\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n&lt;!&#8211; [et_pb_line_break_holder] &#8211;&gt;[\/et_pb_code][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Highlights of press briefing by spokesperson Brenden Varma \u2013 5 September 2018<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":202,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[232],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-165502","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-spokespersons-briefings","et-doesnt-have-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.9 -
