In 2017 the General Assembly decided to establish a new process for the selection of the President of the General Assembly. In its resolution 71\/323, entitled \u201cRevitalization of the work of the General Assembly<\/a>\u201d, the Assembly decided to conduct informal interactive dialogues with candidates for the position of President of the General Assembly, thus contributing to the transparency and inclusivity of the process. Furthermore, the General Assembly called upon candidates to present to the Assembly their vision statements.<\/p>\n

The new process was carried out in full respect of the established principle of geographical rotation and General Assembly resolution 33\/138 of 19 December 1978. Consequently, the President of the 73rd session of the General Assembly was to be elected from the Latin American and Caribbean Group.<\/p>\n

In line with the new process, the President of the 72nd<\/sup> session of the General Assembly convened informal interactive dialogues with the candidates on 4 May 2018.<\/p>\n

In accordance with Rule 30 of the Rules of Procedure of the General Assembly, the Assembly shall elect a President and twenty-one Vice-Presidents at least three months before the opening of the session over which they are to preside. The election of the President of the 73rd<\/sup> session of the General Assembly took place in the General Assembly Hall at Â鶹APP Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, 5 June 2018<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

H.E. Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa Garc\u00e9s was elected as President<\/a> <\/strong>of the 73rd session of the General Assembly. She is the fourth woman to hold this position<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n
