Conversation with academics on ¡°Human Capital: culture and heritage unleashing the potential"
As part of the Africa 2021 Dialogue Round, OSAA organised a session on the sub-theme "Human Capital: Culture and Heritage Unlocking Potential". During this session, panelists examined the historical realities of Africa's unity and the role that culture plays in its unity and development. They considered how Africa could operationalise the instruments that are supposed to lead to its sustainable development by valuing its history and cultures (the 2030 and 2063 agendas, the renaissance charter, the UNESCO conventions, etc.) as well as the next steps to be considered and what is the most appropriate and suitable way to really change the paradigm.
The session also discussed the role of culture as an engine of development and the return of cultural assets to Africa as an opportunity to unlock the continent's human capital. It was reaffirmed that the unification of Africa and the liberation of its human potential also requires a revaluation of Africa's place in world history and in particular the moments when Africa's history and that of Europe were intertwined. The need to change the narrative was also mentioned several times, and this requires profound changes in education systems and the production of resources by Africans and for Africans.
Coast and Conquest - History Of Africa with Zeinab Badawi [Episode 12]
In this episode Zeinab Badawi starts with a visit to some of the most sensational historic sites in Africa: the Swahili coastal settlements of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique on Africa¡¯s Indian Ocean coast.
Zeinab then relates the tragic history of how the arrival of the Arabs in this part of Africa marked the start of an international trade in many millions of enslaved Africans.
The Arabs and their Swahili partners were the first outsiders to trade in humans on the continent from as early as the 7th century. She highlights how this trade differed from the much later trans-Atlantic slave trade, and how some Africans today view this painful period in their history.
