¡°The Africa Dialogue Series (ADS) is a platform for listening to Africa¡¯s youth and for the youth to take their rightful place as key voices in policy discussions. As part of the OSAA¡¯s programmes, I always emphasized the need for youth co-leadership and active participation and we ensured since the first series, that youth was provided with that space,¡± Ms. Bience Gawanas, former Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, launches the Youth Stage at the Africa Dialogue Series.

Drawing on both the ADS and African Union themes for 2021, she emphasizes the importance of art, culture and heritage as powerful tools for taking ownership of our present and future and future, and building the Africa of tomorrow based on joint, strong cultural identity.

Africa¡¯s greatest asset is her young population and the potential that they hold. In this conversation, young people from diverse backgrounds talk about the Africa Dialogue Series theme ¡°Cultural identity and ownership: reshaping mindsets,¡± and focus on the sub-theme ¡°Sustainable peace for development: factoring in history.¡±

During this engaging discussion, the panelists ponder on some pertinent questions and propose concrete solutions on how Africa can harness the potential of young people to address conflict, promote sustainable peace and enhance development. They also analyze how conflicts were resolved in the past, what modern society can learn from history and the role of arts and culture in promoting peace and development.

In this episode Zeinab Badawi travels to the country of her birth and the very region of her forefathers and mothers: northern Sudan where she sheds light on this little-known aspect of ancient African history, the great Kingdom of Kush.

Its kings ruled for many hundreds of years and indeed in the eighth century BC they conquered and governed Egypt for the best part of 100 years. Furthermore, Kush was an African superpower. Its influence extended to the modern day Middle East.

Zeinab visits the best preserved of Sudan¡¯s one thousand pyramids and shows how some of the ancient customs of Kush have endured to this day.
