21 November 2024. "This session seeks to highlight some practical entry points within the global green transition to assist in more of a green ease than a squeeze: securing new market opportunities for the LDCs. It aims to cover the following non-exhaustive thematic areas:

– Technology transfer
– Carbon pricing, including taxation
– Sustainability standards
– Environmentally friendly goods and services
– Connecting stakeholders with new sources of investment and finance

The overarching objective is to change some of the current dynamics and move away from a potential green squeeze to green ease: a transformative agenda that boosts green credentials, competitiveness and sustainable structural economic transformation."

"In the lead-up to COP29, this online event convenes LDC policymakers, international experts and other stakeholders to:

– Provide insights into the expected outcomes of COP29 with a focus on LDC priorities

– To support the identification and creation of solutions to advance sustainable development and a just transition to low-carbon economies within LDCs; and

– Explore how trade and investment policy and their deployment to support LDCs sustainable just transition.

This event will serve as a primer for COP29, specifically the Climate Finance, Investment and Trade Day (14 November), which will seek to explore how to advance more innovative solutions to address the climate emergency and how trade and investment policies can be leveraged to secure more climate finance for LDCs."

Enabling a "Green Seize" of New Trade Opportunities for LDCs: Learning from the COVID-19 response to address the climate emergency (WTO with ODI, EIF)

3 December 2023. The Least Developed Countries (LDCs) account for less than 1% of global exports but almost 15% of global population.
The Sustainable Development Goals included a goal to double their share in world exports by 2020, but this target was not met. Given the urgent need to confront the climate emergency between now and 2030, a number of new green trade measures will shape low-carbon global supply chains; resilience building within supply chains is also determining new trade opportunities. There are many lessons that can be drawn from the Covid-19 experience to ensure gainful LDC participation within green resilient supply chains – this includes ensuring open markets, facilitating technology transfers, and supporting engagement with the private sector. This session will therefore focus on the role of the multilateral trading system in supporting LDCs to engage with the new trade opportunities arising from shift to low carbon supply chains - shifting the dynamics away from a potential “green squeeze” to a “green seize” of new market opportunities for LDCs.

Increased industrialization as a tool for economic diversification and the building of productive capacities if left unchecked could result in negative environmental impacts. The AfCFTA presents significant promise for Africa's development. In the context of rapidly advancing environmental degradation and climate change, the AfCFTA must also serve as a lever for sustainable growth on the continent in line with Africa's agenda 2063. Achieving sustainable development in Africa will entail quickening the pace of industrialisation in a way that is environmentally sustainable. This will require a green industrialisation that includes key components to reduce environmental footprints. In this session, partner perspectives will be shared on the implementation of the AfCFTA particularly efforts towards the use of the AfCFTA as an instrument for advancing green growth within the free trade area. In addition, the role of trade related technical assistance particularly national implementation arrangements in advancing green industrialisation will be explored.

Aligning climate and trade policy for LDCs and graduates

Graduation from “Less Developed Country” status marks huge economic and social progress, but risks can arise after the loss of international support measures. To deliver the SDGs and halve greenhouse gas emissions, climate and trade policy need to align in a way that works for the poorest.

The LDC Group and the Alliance of Small Island States formed an influential and ambitious bloc in the UN climate negotiations. However, LDC trade and climate policy communities need to engage in a structured way to support transitional measures.

This event seeks to reflect on the outcomes of COP26 (particularly around carbon markets) and their implications for the LDC Group ahead of MC12. The event seeks to engage in discussions on trade, the environment and climate, building on the outcomes of the Aligning Climate and Trade Policy for LDCs and Graduates assignment undertaken by ODI and IIED for the Enhanced Integrated Framework of the WTO.
