2024 HLPF Side Event: Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development: Voices from the LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS

Organized by the �鶹APP Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), in collaboration with the UN Youth Office, this side event aims to amplify the voices of youth from the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in driving sustainable development agendas. In the lead-up to the Youth Declaration of the Summit of the Future, youth speakers from LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS will share their experiences and discuss global challenges, ensuring that their voices are integral to global conversations.

19 July 2023. Despite the trend towards more financing through multilateral platforms, Least Developed Countries (LDCs) still face myriad challenges to accessing sufficient resources to achieve their sustainable development and climate objectives. With support from Canada, UN OHRLLS conducted a study in late 2022/early 2023 that directly engaged with LDC finance and planning ministries to better understand and synthesize their experience in accessing traditional loans and grants, as well as climate finance, to advance national projects and programs. This event will present the findings of the study and a high-level panel will discuss the recommendations and ways forward.

What are game changing actions to implement the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs? What are potential solutions to support crisis response, recovery and SDG progress? This session of the 2023 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will focus on examples of policies, measures and actions underway to improve the lives of the most vulnerable, in the countries furthest behind. It will include actions that must be taken urgently to ensure that progress can be made, and solutions for bridging gaps in energy, digital technologies, and gender equality. The discussion will invite examples of inclusive governance and strengthened institutions that apply peer learning activities and whole-of-society approaches that have benefitted from the follow-up and review exercise undertaken through Voluntary National Reviews, reflecting on progress in domestication of the SDGs and their alignment with national development plans, integrated national financing frameworks and strengthened statistical capacities for measuring progress.
