Mr. Jerry Bazile, 1977 - 2010
Interpreter (Haiti)
Jerry Bazile, a national of Haiti, worked as an Interpreter and Field Language Assistant for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) since March 2006.
Jerry studied languages and held a certificate in English from the America English School in Port-au-Prince. He took language and computer science courses at the Institut Universitaire Quisqueya-Amérique and the Faculté de Linguistique also in Port-au-Prince.
A life-long resident of Port-au-Prince, prior to his UN service he worked as a marketing officer and restaurant supervisor and was often called upon to use his translating and interpreting skills.
Jerry also worked with Médecins Sans Frontières as a driver and served as an interpreter between doctors and their patients.
His ability to speak Creole, French and English fluently was an asset to MINUSTAH’s Police Interpreters Unit. He could also read Spanish. One colleague called Jerry “irreplaceable.”
The same colleague said that Jerry “wasn’t afraid of anything,” but that he was “concerned with doing everything well, rather than worrying about what people said about him.”
Jerry is survived by his wife Guerline Prempin and their daughter Claudia Jenny, 5.
