The Role of South–South and Multilateral Cooperation in Strengthening National Capacities for the Analysis and Effective Use of Population Data

UN Secretariat, Conference Room 12
Overview
Accurate, timely, and disaggregated population data are essential for designing evidence-based policies, supporting strategic planning and monitoring of progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Low-income and lower-middle-income countries are entering a crucial phase in reaching the SDGs by 2030 while also confronting evolving demographic shifts. In this context, strengthening national capacities for population estimation, projection, and analysis is becoming increasingly critical.
At the same time, technological innovation is transforming the way population data are analyzed and used. Emerging tools, particularly those leveraging digital innovation and artificial intelligence (AI), offer new opportunities to improve population data systems and enhance national analytical capacities.
South–South and multilateral cooperation play a critical role in supporting countries to strengthen these national capacities. Through peer‑to‑peer learning, technical exchanges, and coordinated support from UN entities and development partners, countries benefit from shared innovations, advanced methodologies, and improved tools for population estimation, projection and analysis. Such collaboration helps broaden access to best practices and accelerates progress in developing resilient and sustainable population data systems.
In this context, the Population Division, the China Population and Development Research Center (CPDRC), Kenya National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) and UNFPA, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of China to the Â鶹APP, will convene a joint side event during CPD59 to showcase recent advances, share national experiences, and highlight opportunities for further cooperation in strengthening demographic evidence systems.
