From 22 to 26 June, the Â鶹APP around the world will mark the first Peacebuilding Week. Commemorating twenty years since the establishment of the UN peacebuilding architecture, the week serves as an inclusive space for local, national, and international champions to reflect on what has been achieved and to look ahead to a new generation of efforts.

Events in New York will convene a broad spectrum of partners, from governments, civil society and youth-led organizations to multilateral financial institutions and the private sector. The Peacebuilding and Peace Support Office (PBPSO) is working with Member States and partners to facilitate events that showcase the accumulated expertise and evidence of what works in peacebuilding.

They will explore how partnerships with young people, the private sector, and digital technology can broaden the pathways to lasting peace through approaches that are nationally owned, locally led and internationally supported.

Anchoring the week will be the 20th Anniversary session of the Peacebuilding Commission on 25 June, to be opened by the Secretary-General. Other events hosted by the UN Secretariat include the launch of the Peacebuilding Impact Hub¡¯s Spotlight study on The Gambia, a high-level meeting with members of the UN-Civil Society Dialogue in Peacebuilding, and a Peace Circle with youth activists.

Meanwhile, Member States will convene over 20 events throughout the week on topics from peace financing to the role of AI in peacebuilding to support for national prevention strategies.

¡°Peacebuilding Week is a significant moment to reflect on two decades of collective contributions and to embrace the renewed ambition Member States have set for the UN system," says Elizabeth Spehar, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding and Peace Support, DPPA-DPO.

Mandated by the 2025 General Assembly (A/RES/80/11) and Security Council resolutions (S/RES/2805), it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the inaugural session of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in June 2006 and the launch that same year of the Secretary-General's Peacebuilding Fund. Held under the banner "Peacebuilding@20", this year's observance carries the theme "Partnerships for Innovation, Inclusion and Impact".

Through the twin resolutions, Member States recognized the vital role of the Â鶹APP in conflict prevention and peacebuilding, reaffirmed the centrality of national ownership, and reiterated the importance of partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders.

This first Peacebuilding Week is a timely opportunity to act on those ambitions: to raise the visibility of the Â鶹APP' peacebuilding and prevention work, and to foster stronger partnerships that will keep peacebuilding resilient, dynamic, adaptive and forward-looking.
